WE WENT TO THE DINER FOR LUNCH. It was just like any other diner, but there were tourists dressed in witch hats to amuse me. They didn’t make for much of a distraction when it came to Evan, but I was happy for anything at this point.

Landon, Terry and Gunner already had a table, so we joined them. Gunner immediately read the horror of the afternoon on my face and began peppering me with questions. Bay ultimately told the story because I had no idea where to start.

“You got attacked by a scarecrow?” Landon’s eyes bulged. “How is that possible?”

“Aunt Tillie thinks it’s hoodoo,” Bay replied. “She’s making a call to get answers but won’t tell me who she’s calling.”

“Oh, well, great.” Landon shook his head. “She’ll have some freaking coven descending on us before the end of the day. I don’t want to deal with that.”

“I don’t know what she has planned,” Bay replied. “In fact ... .” She trailed off when a figure appeared at the table. Even though I knew it was impossible, I swear I could almost see the vertebrae in her back stand up and take notice. “Mrs. Little.”

I focused on the woman in question. She wasn’t tall, didn’t boast a commanding presence, but she was obviously used to being the center of attention. The look she murdered Bay with was something straight out of the show When Golden Girls Go Bad.

“I want to talk to you.” Her voice was shrill. “About Tillie.”

Bay didn’t look as if she cared. “If you have a problem with Aunt Tillie, you should take it up with her.”

“I’m taking it up with you.” Mrs. Little was firm. “That ... woman ... unleashed a plague in my store yesterday. You need to do something about it.”

“A plague?” Landon asked. “Are we talking smallpox or the vapors?”

“Bats,” Mrs. Little replied. “She let bats loose in my store.”

“How did she do that?” Bay asked. I expected her to deny the charge outright but she obviously had other plans.

“She just did it!”

“Did she have these bats in her pockets?” Bay pressed. “Where did she get the bats? How did she get them into your store? How do you know she was even involved? Did she say she was involved?”

Mrs. Little’s eyes blazed with fury. “I know it was her.”

“Then prove it,” Landon suggested. “Until then ... go away.” His demeanor told me he hated the woman. I couldn’t exactly blame him.

“I want her punished,” Mrs. Little snapped. “She keeps getting away with it and that only emboldens her.”

“Well, that’s true,” Bay agreed. “Like, right now for example, she’s somewhere in town and I shudder to think what she’s doing.”

Mrs. Little straightened. “She’s downtown right now?”

“She is,” Bay confirmed. “She said she had to make a call and then would meet us for lunch. I hope she’s not up to something.”

“She’d better not be.” Mrs. Little’s cheeks flushed with color. “If I catch her in my store I have the legal right to kill her.
