Chapter 9

Since he hadn’t used a portal, we had no way to track him. We went to Pyro. We needed to analyze what’d just happened and think about our next move.

This time, instead of the conference area, we met in my private space. Trick, Xeyn, and I each had our own office, but this was more than that.

Since Red and I had built this building from the ground up, I’d wanted to make it as comfortable as possible for myself, and my siblings.

In the back, a few doors from my office, was a large apartment. It had a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and a bedroom.

We met in the living room. The space was big enough for us to spread out. I sat on a deep-cushioned black couch, Tix beside me. Red and Thunder sat on the couch opposite us.

Elliott paced the floor, his feet sinking into the plush black carpet. The living room held a large bar, leading into the kitchen, but for now, none of us were having a drink. “We need to find Crane. We caused this. Those people died because of us.”

A hollow feeling entered my stomach and wouldn’t let go. I felt empty inside. We’d known the risk of freeing the Trien, yet we’d done it anyway. We’d been warned how powerful the murdering quad was, yet we’d thought we knew better.

I sat on the edge of the couch, hands folded in front of me. “He apparently likes to kill in the open. I say we look for large sporting events.”

I ran a hand over my face, trying to stave off my weariness. When you raised a shield, it drained your energy. That’s why we didn’t use them unless we absolutely had to.

Red gave me a hard stare. I could tell he wanted to say something, he just wasn’t sure of my response.

“Spit it out,” I said. “We need all the help we can get here.”

Red nodded, but it was a halfhearted nod, like he still wasn’t sure of his next words. “If we run into him again, you may have to do a quake.”

A quake was something my family alone did. At least that’s what I’d always been told. When we quaked, we reached out to the infinite number of planes around us. We pulled on unlimited power, letting if fuel our magic.

When I did a quake, nothing could stop me, hurt me. It was the ultimate power boost but coming down from it was hard. A quake only lasted an hour. Once it was over, it left you completely depleted.

If you did too many in short succession, it could actually take a few years off your life. As it was, coming down from a quake sometimes left you unable to move for days.

Tix looked at Red, then sprung to his feet. “Absolutely not!” he said to Red, showing more anger than I’d ever seen from him. “It’s not your life being put at risk.”

Red’s face paled, then he hopped to his feet as well.
