CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
âSit down, Jabuti, youâre not making any sense,â Don Diego said.
Jabuti had arrived at Andreaâs house in a state of high anxiety and agitation just moments earlier.
âI... I donât know what happened,â Jabuti said just staring at the stone floor of the kitchen.
âGet him a brandy will you, Esteban,â Don Diego said. âTake a seat, Jabuti.â
Esteban quickly returned with the spirit, whereupon Jabuti snatched it from Estebanâs hand and swallowed it in one huge gulp.
Coming to his senses, he looked up and said, âHe knew all about it.â
âAll about what?â Don Diego said. âWhat on earth has happened?â
âHow I escaped from the sultan...â Jabuti paused. âAnd he said that he knew Rodrigo was involved.â
âWho? Slow down.â
âZineb.â
âThe Moor?â
Jabuti nodded.
âBut, how would he know that?â Esteban said joining in. âI heard that Zineb has not set foot in Meknes in years.â
âI thought I was safe here, but it seems like I can never escape from the sultan.â
âYou are safe, he is just one man.â
âHow did he find out?â Don Diego said.
âWalls have ears,â Esteban said. Seeing a puzzled expression on Jabutiâs face, he explained, âItâs an expression. It means that there are always people listening.â
âI see,â Jabuti said. âYes, thatâs right. Zineb said that the soldiers from the palace began talking with his, and thatâs how...â Jabuti trailed off.
âDonât worry, we will think of something,â Don Diego said.
âHe said that he would send news to the sultan of Rodrigoâs part in my escape,â Jabuti said. âI couldnât believe what I was hearing. After all...â he started sobbing, and Esteban laid a comforting hand upon his shoulder. Through tear-filled eyes, Jabuti continued. âAfter all that we have been through, and what Rodrigo has done for me. He has given me so much comfort and strength through this difficult time. I was not going to let it happen.â
âNo, of course not,â Don Diego said.
âThatâs why I had to kill him.â
âWhat?â
A moment of shocked silence then ensued until Esteban asked, âWhere is the body?â
âItâs at the bottom of the cliff,â Jabuti said gloomily.
âCome with me, I might just have an idea.â
Jabuti followed Esteban out of the house, not sure of what they were about to do.
âWhy are you bringing that?â Jabuti asked as Esteban held the brandy bottle which Jabuti had earlier drank of.
âYou will see.â
With dusk descending, Esteban knew that they would be safe from prying eyes. It would be highly unlikely that they would meet anyone on the outskirts of the city, away from any paths or roads. Eventually, they came to the spot, and Jabuti pointed to the bottom of the cliff to where Zinebâs body lay. Peering through the gloom, Esteban lifted the brandy bottle high above his head, taking careful aim. With one swift action, he sent the almost full bottle crashing to the ground just inches from Zinebâs lifeless body. Jabuti looked curiously at Esteban.
âWe both know that they do not drink alcohol in the land of the Moors, is that not so?â
Jabuti nodded but looked even more confused.
