The single largest source of revenue in Mexico is oil. But the world economic crisis in 2008 instigated a fall in the price of that commodity. Mexico, in spite of modest energy reform, refused to allow foreign investment in oil expropriation, and its national production fell from 3.3 million barrels per day in 2004 to 2.8 million barrels in 2008. As a result of this sharp decline, Mexico now runs the risk of sliding from an oil-exporting nation to an oil-importing nation by 2015, according to a report in Forbes.18
And hundreds of thousands of Mexicans continue leaving the country every year.
