Belgian chocolates in hand and Orly sitting beside her on the front porch, Jennifer waited to see if anyone could hear her inside the house. She could already hear the blaring swing music coming from inside Sharky’s little cottage. It seemed to fit the mood of the sweet house perfectly. The front porch must’ve been glorious in full summer, with arched canes of climbing roses on both sides of the front steps, and a walled-in flower garden full of hollyhocks and herbs. A discarded wheelbarrow and garden rake sat by the side of the house, and a set of windchimes tinkled sweetly in the afternoon breeze.
The moment the front door opened, Jennifer was instantly pulled inside by friendly hands. Maybe she was late, because everyone was already there. From what she could see, there seemed to be some dancing going on, and each one of the women had a glass in hand and a true party mood going.
Nedra reached down to pat Orly, much to his satisfaction, and gave Jennifer a sideways hug to keep her wineglass from spilling. "You're just in time!" she said, raising her voice over the music. "We're all in the kitchen, making a curried seafood stir-fry. You do like curry, don’t you?"
"Sure! Sounds great."
Sharky came dancing by her, wearing a spectacular purple hat with a wide brim. She was shaking to the wild swing music and casually handing Jennifer a sloshing glass of white wine. "Try this. Trust me. It'll help dinner go down better. Carissa's doing the spices on the curry, so anything can happen."
Feeling like she'd just been warned, Jennifer took a sip and watched Sharky dance back to the kitchen. Following her, she could see Nedra out of the corner of her eye, turning down the stereo a bit.
The moment she walked in the kitchen, Jennifer felt right at home. It was full of some of the things she loved best in the world: the smells of great food cooking, and good friends laughing. Even though she barely knew the women she could feel herself relaxing. Yes, she was there to see what she could learn to help bolster Gable's world domination plans, as she liked to call them, but maybe today she'd be able to relax a bit and just enjoy some good company. It had been a while since she'd been back to Ravenwood Cove, and she'd started realizing how much she missed the comradery she'd had there. Emailing back and forth with Amanda and occasional phone calls just weren’t the same as having a friend to sit down and talk to.
"Here! Taste this!" Carissa ordered, holding out a wooden spoon and blowing on the sauce-covered shrimp it held.
Jennifer took a cautious bite and instantly regretted it. Coughing, her mouth nearly on fire, the curry made her eyes water as she tried to keep from aspirating the shrimp as she gulped for air.
Sharky hadn't been kidding. Carissa liked things hot. After a moment of adjustment, Jennifer finally chewed a bit and managed to swallow the spicy bite down.
