Chapter 11

“Not Mina?”

“I don’t think so, Gillian. Surely, George would have said, considering he was here to pick up something she’d asked for. I keep forgetting that she’s part of the club and, therefore, a target herself.”

“The sooner we figure out what she’s trying to tell us, the better. Although this drawing may help.” Gillian frowned as she examined it. “I think I need a magnifying glass.”

“I have a battery-operated one that lights up.” I walked over to my desk and pulled out a large magnifying glass, brought it over to her, and flicked the switch on to demonstrate. “Remember to turn it off when you’re through so the batteries don’t run down.”

“Perfect!” She sat down and began the examination. “Looks like Hepzibah is a composite, a persona used by anyone in the group. Which reminds me. I had some trouble pairing people with avatars until I remembered our conversation about these creatures being of two genders. I think I’ve got it now.” She slid a sheet of paper across the table toward me. “I had Joe as the centaur because of his military service, but now I think he’s the satyr because of his drinking. I think Amanda Glenn is the centaur because she’s an award-winning horsewoman. The centaur looks androgynous to me.”

I nodded as I looked over the list.

We both jumped at the knock on the door.

“That’s probably Ricardo.” I yelled, “C’mon in.”

The door opened to admit Ricardo and Marc, talking as they entered.

“Hey! Marc has the reworked footage.” Ricardo strode over to the table. “What are you guys up to?”

“This is what we wanted your help with.” I pushed the lists toward them. “We’re trying to figure out which characters go with which of the Triangle members to help us decrypt Mina’s journal. The key to figuring out who the murderer is could be in there.”

“Strikes me as a long shot,” Marc said, picking up one of the lists.

“There’s also this.” I handed the picture to Ricardo. “Notice that the characters on this list,” I tapped the paper Marc was holding, “are woven into the woman’s dress in this picture that I took off the wall in Mina’s house.”

I pointed to the mermaid whose slender fishy form was part of the train at the back of the woman’s gown. Both Ricardo and Marc compared the drawing to Gillian’s lists.

Jack closed his computer and got up. “Want a beer, either of you?”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

Jack headed toward the kitchen.

“We’re trying to figure out if the kangaroo is a mythical figure in any culture. We’re guessing at these relationships.”

Marc looked up from the list. “And this is important how?”

“Mina had me retrieve the diary from her house and then told me to read it, indicating there might be something in here that could help us figure out who’s trying to wipe out the club,” I said.

“If that’s what they’re trying to do,” Marc said. “There hasn’t been anything on the news yet that would suggest that connection.”

I frowned at him. “But you’ve been with us on campus.
