The Three Selfing Repertoires

In the previous chapter, we described the acquisition of perspective taking or deictic relations (I–you, here–there, now–then). RFT suggests that the acquisition of perspective taking—in combination with an extensive relational repertoire involving multiple different types of relations (in other words, an extensive linguistic repertoire)—contributes to establishing three functionally different selfing repertoires, or senses of self (Hayes, 1995):

Self-as-content: the conceptualized self, or self as the content of verbal relations

Self-as-process: the knowing self, or self as an ongoing process of verbal relations

Self-as-context: the observing self, or self as the context of verbal relations
