Morfa Mawddach

Annual passenger usage: 11,434

Least used station rank: 260

Postcode: LL39 1BQ

Ordnance Survey national grid reference: SH628141

Morfa Mawddach was originally called Barmouth Junction when opened by the Aberystwith (sic) & Welsh Coast Railway (A&WCR) in 1865, taking on its current name in 1960. It is a shadow of what it once was, in that there were once three signal boxes and four platforms, and it was at one time the junction with the line to Ruabon and the short lived Arthog Tramway.

Morfa Mawddach is in a beautiful location, with views of the estuary, mountains, Barmouth Bridge and the town itself, yet the station is now unrecognisable from when I passed through here in 1962. The usual facilities, including a non-working payphone, are present, and a metal shelter painted green, not Arriva ‘yuck’, despite this being in Arriva territory – super. Old platform remains are easily seen and accessible, with the disused trackbed forming the start of the Mawddach Trail. There is a large car park which is popular with walkers using the trail.
