Chapter Twelve

Leo woke before dawn with a smile on his face as he remembered Max falling asleep while they were on Skype together. He missed him so much, his heart literally hurt. He went out for a jog, taking his truck up into the hills and spent an hour out on the trail, working up a hell of a sweat. He got back home with just enough time to shower, check his messages, and head out the door. As he was driving in, his phone rang and felt a pang of disappointment when Snow’s number popped up on the Bluetooth screen instead of Max’s. Then again, it was nearly eight and Max had probably been at work for hours.

“Good morning, SAC,” he said, hitting the button as he answered the call.

“Doc? I need everyone in the office. When’ll you be in?”

“I’m already on the way in…should be there in about twenty,” he replied, checking the digital clock on the dashboard.

“Good. See you then.”

“Okay…hey is something wrong?” When Lincoln didn’t reply immediately, he checked the dash. The boss had hung up. “That was weird,” he muttered to himself.

Twenty minutes later, Leo walked into the office, glancing sideways to see that most of the others had already gathered in the conference room. Coffee in hand, he stepped inside and noted the absence of Noah and Snow. “Morning,” he said, taking a seat between Mac and Beth.

“Hey, Doc,” Carter said.

“Where’re the others? Snow made it sound like it was urgent.”

“They’re coming,” Kindness said. “Snow said they’d be here in a second.”

“Gotcha.” He looked over at Beth and smiled. “Were you able to get those little felt hearts to Rebecca Broadchurch?”

“I dropped them in the mail to her grandparents with a little note last night,” Beth said. “Have you heard from Max?”

Leo nodded, unable to wipe the smile off his face. “I talked to him last night. Do you believe he had the audacity to fall asleep while we were on Skype together?”

The others chuckled, and Leo glanced toward the door when Noah came whirring into the room with Lincoln following right behind.

“Sorry about that, folks,” Snow said. “Thanks to all of you coming in on time today. Noah has an announcement.”

“What’s going on, Noah?” Leo asked as Lincoln snapped off the light.

The braid beads clicked as Noah shook his head, his wide grin lighting up his face, and his eyes bright. “Will someone hand me the remote?”

Mac leaned over the table with his long arms and handed it to Noah, who lowered the monitor from the ceiling. “First off. I’ve found La Roy Heller.” He began to type on the laptop sitting on the wheelchair’s tray table.

“Oh yeah?” Beth asked. “Do tell.”

A second later, three images popped up on the screen.

“This is him. He fits the description of the guy based on the fact that first, he never even tried to hide by changing his name and second, he’s been known to hang out with the free sovereign types and last, the image of the masked face from the podcast is a seventy-three percent match.
