After the troops had been settled and everyone had had a chance to eat something other than trail rations, Tamala led Astridson through the tunnel to the underground chamber.

She heard the sharp intake of breath from the half Lighter, half human as he gazed upon the vista of the mausoleums and the two gates.

“We’ll not start today.

Dorrin wants to get the troops properly rested and organised before we do, an idea I protested but I think he may be right.”

“I agree with Dorrin,” Astridson replied, “I don’t know about the men, but I know I need a proper night’s rest before we try anything.

It’s strange though.”

“What’s strange?”

“Toward the northern end of Agorel, well into the gorge and away from the route out that I led Cal and yourself through, there is a small stone building. It’s probably not even a quarter the size of these constructions, but the stonework looks remarkably similar.”

“Who built it?”

“According to the old wives' tales, Lighters did.”
