Chapter Nine

Paul always looked and smelled great, but right after a shower he looked adorable on top of it. He hadn’t bothered to dry his hair and was in boxers and a T-shirt as we settled into the room.

I’d changed into a nightshirt and put my hair into a ponytail. The nightstand lamp was still on along with the TV. I saw a couple of ghosts hovering but they weren’t attacking or making noise yet. They didn’t seem aggressive at all.

“Ready when you are,” he said.

“Okay, have a seat somewhere.” I nodded.

“Do we need to sage the room or mist holy water?” he asked.

I smiled. “This part is more like talk therapy. I don’t see any demons. The dark mist usually gives them away. They can try to impersonate ghosts but it’s working less and less on me.”

“Good. I can’t see anyone so I’m here for backup.” He sat on the other side of the bed.

I turned off the TV, which had enough white noise to distract me from hearing the dead, and I flipped off the lamp. In the darkness, I saw ghosts begin to materialize more clearly.

An old man, a middle-aged woman, and a small boy.

“Are you trapped here?” I asked.

“Don’t talk to her, she’s one of them,” the boy said to the adult ghosts.

“One of whom?” I asked.

“There are people in the hotel who have supernatural powers,” the woman said.

“That’s me. I talk to the dead, angels, demons, or whatever. I get visions and stuff.” I shrugged. “There are more than just me? I knew it.”

“There are more. You’re part of their group, don’t lie,” the man said.

I shook my head. “No, I’m not part of their group. I came with my friends. My brother, Frankie, works here.”

“You were following one of them, watching him today. Clearly, you’re in it together. I watched from the security room,” the boy said.

“In what? What are they doing?” I asked.

“We don’t know. We tried to find out from your friends, but they can’t see us or hear us,” the woman replied.

“Right, they couldn’t get any sleep. They heard some things. Please let people in this room sleep,” I said.

The man huffed. “We don’t haunt for fun. We were trying to warn them. To get information. Those demons...you don’t seem to have one in you.”

“A demon? No, I run with angels more. Amy?” I called.

My guardian angel appeared and filled the room with a warm glow.

Paul didn’t see it, but I could tell he felt the change in the room.

“Should I go?” Paul asked.

“No, we’re fine.” I smiled and turned back to the ghosts. “I drive demons away. Well, the angels are good at that. I can bring more if needed. How many demons are there?”

The trio of ghosts stayed quiet.

“Are you three trapped here or are you refusing to move on?” I asked.

“What’s that mean?” the boy asked.

“Amy, we might need more angels. The kid needs an escort,” I said.

Amy nodded and five more angels appeared around the room.

“Cool!” the boy said.
