CHAPTER ELEVEN

Willow Cove’s library was one of the only newer buildings in town. Only because it was a metal pull barn, finished out within the last few years. The old, two-story library in the center of town had been bought out by the city for a bigger town hall.

I hadn’t been to the new library yet but as soon as I stepped through the front doors and took in the smell of moth balls and paperback books, it was as if nothing had changed.

Well, except for the fact the old library had hardwood floors and built-in bookshelves while this new place had a few rows of metal shelves and a polished concrete floor. There was a large children’s area complete with green carpet and walls painted to replicate a garden. Next to that were a few rows of computers and printers.

I guess Mrs. Beasley, the old librarian had finally retired since, as the gossiping hair dressers had said, Dana’s blond bob poked out from behind the front circulation desk.

“Hey, Dana,” Gavin said with that smooth southern drawl, a big, toothy grin painted on his face as he leaned against the counter.

My eyes narrowed and I quickly had to blink. Was he flirting? And was I jealous that he was?

No. Impossible.

Dana adjusted her cats eye glasses. “Hey, Gavin, what can I do for you?”

I found myself breathing a sigh of relief and was glad that neither party looked in my direction.

Okay, so she wasn’t interested. Maybe the gossiping hair dressers were right about her love life.

“You know I’ve been working at the bed and breakfast and the new boss, Aubrey, and I were hoping to look through some old newspaper articles. See if there is anything maybe we can add to the history of the house for guests.”

Gavin shot me a wink and all of the color felt like it drained from my face.

We hadn’t talked about the whole ‘me being Co-owner thing’ but I guess he caught onto that pretty quickly.

And maybe we’d have to talk about it. Or I could just put my head down and go through old newspapers. Hopefully.

Dana pursed her lips. “Well, all of the old newspapers are digitized now, so you can go on any of the computers and find them in the Google Drive.”

“All right, thanks, Dana,” Gavin said, tapping the desk before turning toward me. “Shall we, boss lady?”

“Sure,” I said through gritted teeth before heading toward the computer corner.

Literally a small corner with five computers lined up on a long table near the wall. Folding metal chairs placed before each one.

“Boss lady?” I hiss-whispered.

“Hey, you’re the one who said it first when we were at George’s. Since it worked so good there, thought it might here.” He smirked, pulling out a chair.

He looked at me, then looked back at the chair, eyeing me as if I would take it.

We might have been on good terms, but I still didn’t completely trust him not to pull the chair out from under me.

So I grabbed the chair next to his and plopped down in front of the computer.
