Chapter Ten

I’d just turned on my car in front of the university, when Shannon called. “He’s getting out on bail.” The relief in her voice put a smile on my face.

“I know one coffee house owner who is extremely happy right now.”

“Girl, you have no idea.”

I did. I was equally excited. Trials took a long time to put together and that gave us a better chance of finding the real killer before they sent Michael away.

“Was it the lawyer who finally convinced him?”

She laughed. “No. That would be me. I decided enough was enough. I went down there and told him what your brother said to me earlier this morning. That he was going to county and it was not a nice place. That he was being selfish making me worry all the time.

“That I cry myself to sleep. And if things didn’t get fixed, well, either way, we need to spend as much time together as possible. Then I cried. Like big blubbery tears. He can’t take a woman crying, especially me. I wasn’t faking it. Though, I would have done that a long time ago if I’d known how fast it worked on him.”

I snorted and then coughed a little. It was a good thing I wasn’t on the road yet. “I’d like to come see you guys—not tonight. You need some alone time, but maybe tomorrow.”

“Oh, that’s why I called. I’m throwing a little welcome home party for him tonight at my place. Just some sweets, snacks and wine. Nothing too fancy. Jake and Kane are coming. For the record, I invited Greg, but he’s working another case tonight.”

My brother had been busier than ever lately. They usually sat around the station most days playing solitaire or poker on their computers, but he’d been out in the field almost every day since the murder. The fall festival security was a big deal, but I wondered if there might be something else going on. I needed to ask him about that.

“What time and what do you want me to bring?”

“Around seven, and I’ve got everything covered. Oh, and George Clooney is invited as well. Michael was asking about him.”

“He’ll be okay at home for a little while.” Well, last time I’d left him he’d eaten all the sofa cushions. Nothing like some separation anxiety with a ginormous dog.

George grunted from the back seat, as if to say, “No. I won’t. I might eat a sofa if you aren’t there to hang out with me.”

Weird since most of the day and night he slept. But when he was alone, he was so anxious. And given what had happened over the last week, it probably wasn’t a good idea. He might eat the door if something was going on outside.

“No. Really. He loves Mr. Snuffles, even if that love isn’t returned. If he’s here, I don’t have to worry about Snuffs coming out of the bedroom and walking all over the food. I swear that cat is Houdini. I’ll be glad when Michael and I are married, and I can let him outside at the winery.
