Asya and I went over the second batch of copyedits for the new book. “On page twenty-six, I’d like to change asshole to arsehole, if that’s okay,” I said at one point. A while later I heard myself say, “That should be a comma after cunt, not a period.”

Jesus, I thought. What kind of a writer am I?

At last night’s book signing I met a Harvard professor. We got to talking and when I referred to someone or other as a barbarian, he asked if I knew what the word originally meant. “It’s someone who can’t speak Greek,” he said. “Someone who makes a sound like bar-bar-bar. Funny, huh?”

Later in the evening I met a woman from Bucharest. “My publicist is Romanian,” I told her. “Not full-blooded like you, but still, she can curse a little. Her favorite saying taught to her by her grandparents is ‘I shit in…’ God, what is that? ‘Shit in…’”

“‘I shit in your mother’s mouth’?” the Romanian woman asked. “That’s probably what it was. It’s a very popular curse.”

She walked away and I thought, Well, I can see why. I shit in your mother’s mouth. Does it get any nastier than that?
