As I approached the house, I saw that a familiar van had returned. Scott must’ve called in reinforcements. It wouldn’t be the first time Carman showed up during a crisis. She didn’t just attract chaos. She was drawn to it. I mounted the steps to the porch where my sister waited. “You knew about Scott, didn’t you?”

Carman closed her mouth on the comment she’d been about to say and rolled her eyes. “Of course I knew. Do you think I’d put you under the care of a stranger? Of someone I didn’t trust? Dylan knows him too, and I trust Dylan.”

“Why didn’t you tell me? You constantly harp about how much you hate secrets.” It was a challenge to glare into her eyes since her stilettos enabled her to tower over me more than usual.

“Why would I? It would have only hurt you, and you’d never have given him a chance. You wouldn’t have gotten to know him. You both need each other more than you realize to heal your past wounds.” Carman frowned. “Besides, Mom didn’t allow me. Actually, she said all of that, but I have to admit, it’s good advice. If you don’t like the advice, or don’t agree with it, that doesn’t mean it’s not for your own good.”

She pressed her hand to her mouth. “For magic’s sake, I’m starting to sound like Mom. Before you know it, I’ll be picking up her other idiosyncrasies.” She grabbed my arms. “Please, stop me if I start wearing sensible shoes. Stage an intervention, spell me—something.”

I glanced toward the house. How many prying ears were listening in on our conversation? This neighborhood spent so much time eavesdropping—they must be terribly bored stuck in this witchness protection program.

Carman narrowed her eyes on my neck and gasped. “Why aren’t you wearing the necklace Mom got you?”

“How can I when I might shift into something at any time? But I’m sure you knew about that, too.” I pushed past her into the house. Scott had probably told her everything since they treated me like a responsibility instead of a person. “And I hate to tell you this, but you are starting to turn into Mother.” I opened the hall closet door to display four tiny suitcases lined up, as well as two large ones and a weird, multi-colored bag that could only belong to Winona. “Seriously, Carman, go bags?”

She shrugged. “I’ve decided that isn’t a bad idea.” Her heels clacked as she followed me to my bedroom.

I spun to face her once we were both inside the room. “Close the door behind you. I doubt it’s much better insulated against all the neb-noses in this house, but we can only hope. Time to start spilling the beans, sister. If you know everything about Scott, then who did this to him?” I could only assume there was something more to the unusual growing tattoos and hoped it played into his rationale for working for my father. Dylan had been his partner; perhaps they’d all been blind to my father’s madness.
