Joan Halifax tells of a woman who, while dying, blissfully persists in saying, “I am not dying.” Her friends are concerned, but Halifax doesn’t try to fix it. We really don’t know that it is delusion or denial — we don’t know what this woman is experiencing. Maybe the “I” that is not dying is something that was never born and can never die. In the same way, Robert Aitken tells us:

One evening Woodpecker asked, “What’s the void?” Raven said, “Not the void.” Woodpecker asked, “It’s not really empty?” Raven said, “The truth is, I really don’t know.”
