Nathan was as good as his word, and I’d barely touched my Cornish split – a sweet roll served with cream and jam – when he entered. He saw me and grinned.

‘Might have known you’d find cake,’ he said, signalling over to the waitress that he’d have the same.

‘I always like to check out the competition,’ I said, as defensively as it was possible to speak with a mouth full of bun. ‘I should have made some of these for the festival.’

The waitress brought Nathan a cup of tea and a split. He took a bite.

‘Now that’s good,’ he said. ‘I had one of those weird saffron buns yesterday. I don’t know who made them but they don’t go with that lovely scrumpy aftertaste…’

I laughed. ‘Not much does.’

‘Anyway,’ he said, taking a sip of his tea, ‘I’ve left the laptop with the technical nerd guys and they said they’ll look at it directly, so hopefully they’ll find something.’

‘Don’t hold your breath,’ I said. ‘If they said “dreckly”, you might well think that means “directly” but it doesn’t. It means “when I can be bothered”.’

He laughed. ‘Yeah, I’ve noticed that. Everyone runs on different time down here, don’t they? No one just gets on with it.’

‘We do it slow, but we do it once, and properly,’ I said, and he laughed again.

‘I’ll take your word for that.’
