Chapter 11

“Well, I’m glad you didn’t have to sprint back to the car this time,” Ava said as I got into the driver’s seat. “How did it go? Did you find anything out?”

“Aye,” I said with a nod. “I had a very interesting chat with Sid, actually.”

“You did?” she asked incredulously as she had expected them to have been asleep or absent.

“Aye,” I confirmed. “He’s actually quite a nice chap.”

“Please don’t tell me you’ve started making friends with drug dealers,” she sighed.

“I’m not,” I assured her. “He was surprisingly helpful, actually. I think he knew that I was genuinely just there for information, and he didn’t like Max or Pete.”

“Pete?” Ava asked.

“I’ve got a lot to catch you up on,” I said with a wry smile.

“Well, go on, then, we haven’t got all day,” she pressed.

“Alright, alright,” I said. “So, Sid told me all about Max. He didn’t like the guy and said he wasn’t really part of the group.”

“Well, he would, wouldn’t he,” she commented. “To cover his own back.”

“I guess,” I said. “But he did sound like he really didn’t like the guy. He said he’d seen Max driving the van around recently, though, and reckoned he’s linked to the robberies. We’ll know whether or not that’s the case as soon as those DNA results come back from the van and the body.”

“Aye,” Ava said with a nod. “Go on.”

“He made it very clear to me that he and his lads aren’t in the business of killing people,” I added. “Most of the guns aren’t even loaded.”

“Really?” she remarked.

“Aye,” I replied. “I was just as surprised as you are.”

“So, put me out of my misery,” Ava said. “Who the hell is Pete?”

“Ah, yes,” I said. “Well, I showed Sid the picture. You know, the one on Max’s Facebook where Paul is in the background?”

“Aye,” she replied.

“He said he’d seen him around here a couple of times with Max,” I continued. “Sid thinks he’s a bit unstable.”

“Right,” she pressed.

“So, I thanked Sid and said I was going to pay Paul a visit,” I continued. “But then, Sid asked who Paul was. I told him it was the man I just showed him, but he was certain that his name was Pete, not Paul. Pete McPherson.”

“So, what does that mean?” Ava asked.

“Well, the most obvious explanation is that Paul lied about what his name was when he came here with Max,” I said. “But then there’s a possibility that it’s some sort of multiple personality situation?”

“I doubt the second one,” Ava reasoned. “But, we won’t rule it out.”

“I think those are currently our two options,” I said. “Unless you’ve got any ideas?”

“Not right now,” she admitted.

“I reckon we should head back to the station and get Martin involved,” I decided. “We need to look into who Pete McPherson is.”

“Agreed,” she replied.

I turned the car on and started to drive towards the police station. I had my fingers crossed that Martin had calmed down after the discovery of the body this morning as we could really use his help for the rest of the day.
