Chapter 14

Unzipping her suitcase was like greeting an old friend. Addie inhaled the scent of her clothes, perfumed by her favorite dryer sheets. She winced only slightly as she realized that her great aunts didn’t own a dryer. No more tumbled-soft clothes for her unless she took them to the laundromat on the other side of the village.

She carefully pulled out her belongings and sorted through them, laughing at how poorly she’d anticipated her required attire in Little Wittling. Sure, the jeans and comfy leisurewear would come in handy, but so far, she’d had very little need for heels, any of her fancier dresses, or the snug-fitting shapewear she’d packed just in case she wanted to try and impress anyone.

She was thrilled to find her curling iron crammed into the pocket of the largest of the two suitcases. That was until she realized that the plug on the end looked nothing like Eddie and Jo’s sockets.

“Crap.” Addie vaguely remembered her father warning her about the differences in electrical outlets. She wondered if she could find some sort of converter in town. She’d already gotten a new charger cord for her smartphone—the man at the cellphone shop had been super helpful and knowledgeable about that, but even he failed to point out that other American electronics would not work without an adapter—and she resolved to take a trip into Cambridge and look for one sometime in the next few days.

Reunited with her belongings, Addie felt a renewed sense of hope. She had a job interview, plenty of clothes to wear, and would hopefully be able to open a bank account and settle into something of a normal routine. She had enjoyed her first few days in the country playing tourist, but Addie was ready for her new life to truly begin. She didn’t want to feel like she was on vacation all the time. She wanted to feel like she belonged in this new place, in her new reality.

After carefully sorting through most of her things and placing them into various drawers and onto the sturdy wooden hangers her aunts had provided, Addie pulled a small box that her dad had packed for her from the second suitcase. He’d insisted on her keeping it closed up until she got to Little Wittling, and she had completely forgotten that it even existed until she saw its carefully taped edge poking out from the pocket of the suitcase lid.

Addie slid a fingernail carefully beneath the tape and peeled it back. Inside the box was a handful of old photographs, a handful of her favorite hard candies she’d loved since childhood. She laughed as the watermelon-flavored Jolly Ranchers tumbled out of the box and onto the bed.

“Oh, Dad,” she muttered, fighting the urge to cry. It was just like him to do something silly and sentimental like this. She saw a folded piece of notebook paper among the photographs and pulled it out.

‘Dear Addie,

I know you’ll love Little Wittling as much as I do.
