I walked toward the house, unlocked the door, and went inside. Everything looked familiar. I watered the plants I didn’t have, changed the litter box for the cat I didn’t have and took out the garbage that wasn’t there. In other words, once I paid a visit to each room, I sat down in my recliner, dozed for a few minutes and then called Jennifer.

“I hope you’re not calling to tell me that there’s been another murder and you’re not coming.”

“Nope. I just left a good-looking woman wearing a bikini, sitting in a hot tub. I decided that I’d rather be with you.”

“You were in a hot tub with another woman?”

“Nope. Her husband was there. But she did look good in a bikini.”

“Where was this woman?”

“Next door.”

“Would she happen to have been at your Christmas party and would her name have been Annabelle?”

“That does sound familiar. I think her name is still Annabelle. I think she said something about her husband getting ready to take a business trip out of town for a month or so.”

“Cy, I think you need to spend more time at your place in the woods.”

“You think Annabelle would want to come out there, while her husband is away?”

“You think you might want to spend time in the hospital, even after her husband has come back?”

“I was thinking I’d rather spend time at your place with you, over dinner. Anyway, her husband looked like he could take me with one punch. I don’t think he’d want me to take his wife to the woods. Besides, I’ve got a nosy next-door neighbor out where I live in the woods, and he knows about this house too. He might tell the husband that his wife has been visiting.”

“Gotten soft since you moved to the sticks? Most people toughen up when they move to the wilderness. Like I said, with Annabelle moving next-door to your place in town, I’m glad you’re spending most of your time in the wilderness, Cy.”

“You don’t want me close to you?”

“I wouldn’t say that. Talk Lou into moving back to his apartment and I’ll move in next door to you. That way I can keep an eye on you. I’ll know if Annabelle shows up even before her car turns into your driveway.”

“An eye is okay, but I was hoping for more.”

“How about two arms, and maybe two lips.”

“I thought you liked roses.”

“You’re bringing me flowers?”

“Not this time. There aren’t any growing in my neighbor’s yard.”

“So, when are you coming?”

“That’s me at the front door now.”

“No, it’s not. You called me on that antique house phone of yours. I know you. Come on whenever you want. How about dinner at 6:00?”

“And kisses until then?”

“Sounds good to me. You are talking about the Hershey kind, aren’t you?”

“Those are good too. I’ll probably be there within an hour.”

I hung up and went to see if I had any parsley between my teeth. I felt confident that I didn’t. In our burg, they don’t put parsley on hot dogs or ice cream.
