Chapter Twelve

Nick

A week had gone by and still nothing from the TV people. I was beginning to think that I might just not have to worry about it when I woke up to an email that contained entirely too many exclamation points.

“Nick!

We LOVED your audition!!!! You have made it to the final round of auditions for FOODIE TV NETWORK PRESENTS: BEST BAKER IN AMERICA!!!!!!! If you could please select a time from the list below for you and your assistant KRISTIE to come in and do an in-person audition, we will schedule you and give you a confirmation e-mail! You may have up to ONE extra guest per person. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!! And thank you for your interest in FOODIE TV NETWORK PRESENTS: BEST BAKER IN AMERICA!!!!!!”

It was a bit much, but exciting nonetheless. The addition of bringing an extra guest was also nice, since it meant I could invite Alex to join. I was sure she would want to see it all happening live. Sure enough, when I brought it up, while standing next to the coffee maker as we opened the shop for the day, she exploded with almost as many verbal exclamation points as the email had.

“Okay, okay,” I laughed. “It’s just another audition. I might not even get on.”

“Yes, but what if you do?” she said excitedly. “When is it? I have to make sure I call in sick.”

“Today,” I said. “Four in the afternoon. It was the only option they gave me to pick from.”

Alex already had her phone out and was typing something.

“Four...” she repeated.

“Are you texting your work already?”

“Yup,” she said. “Aaaaand, done.”

I laughed.

“All right, I need to get this shop open. Hopefully Kristie gets here soon because she is going to have to make arrangements too.”

Alex beamed as she zipped off, and I opened the shop to little fanfare more than the usual morning regulars.

Around noon, I clocked out and headed home to get ready. My phone was dead, so I stuck it on the charger in the car and in the excitement, left it there as I went inside. I didn’t even notice until I was fully dressed and went to check the time. The clock on the TV showed that I was already running late, and I ran off to the car, stuffed the phone in my pocket, and rushed to the studio just in time.

Alex was already there, parked outside of the studio gates, and when I pulled up beside her car, she got out and jumped in mine. Making our way into the studio, she was absolutely vibrating with excitement, which was enough to actually get me really hyped up too. As skeptical as I was about all this, Alex was excited enough for both of us, and it rubbed off.

“I hope Alton Flay is here,” she said. “He’s so funny. I know he was the judge on the last season.”

“Maybe,” I said. “I’m not getting my hopes up about anyone specific. Remember, I might not even make the actual show.
