CHAPTER FOURTEEN

"So, Mayor Reed?" I asked. Zoey and I were back in her car, although her car had not moved from its spot in front of Mayor Reed's campaign office.

"Didn't do it," Zoey said.

"Yeah, I don't think so either." I moved on. "Her campaign manager?"

"Oh, yeah. Could've definitely done it."

"Yeah, I was thinking that, too." I relaxed into the passenger seat, letting the bucket seat mold me. "I mean the woman's ancient," I complained with the flip of my hand at the front of the office. "What does she really have to lose?"

"Dying in her own bed?" Zoey suggested.

I thought on that. That was a biggie. Who wanted to die of old age in a stacked bunk bed in a tiny little cell holding three other people?

Then again, that felt like a big deal to me. Maybe it wasn't a big deal to Sara Haghler. The court system wasn't known for being the swiftest moving thing. Throw in a little faked dementia, a doctor's appointment for a bad hip, not to mention the jury's disbelief that a nearly ninety-year-old woman could kill a man in his prime—my guess is that she'd never see the inside of a jail cell.

I expressed these thoughts to Zoey.

"She'd have been risking more by not killing Alex," Zoey said, bringing the whole idea to a head.

"Hey," I nudged Zoey's arm with my own. "Look. It's Skylar." I pointed down the sidewalk.

Skylar's long legs ate up the distance on her way back to Mayor Reed's campaign office. Seeing her was like seeing a gazelle in the wild; something you hear about or see pictures of but almost never get to see with your own eyes. She could have been a model. Her strides were effortless in towering high heels, and her silky blonde hair shimmered and bounced as she walked.

"Was she that gorgeous when we saw her inside?" I asked. It was like someone sprinkled sparkle dust on her. I couldn't look away. "She's so tall!" I whispered. And so perfect. That part I didn't say.

Zoey got out of the car. Her moving into action spurred me into doing the same. I hurried after her, and we managed to put ourselves solidly enough in Skylar's path to bring her ground-gobbling steps to a stop. I saw her look over my head at the campaign office doors, sitting some distance from us. Annoyance flickered over her face and settled into her eyes. When she shifted her attention to us, her expression changed to one of agreeable patience, yet that annoyance in her eyes settled in with a condescending coolness.

Zoey had been right to intercept her sooner rather than later. If she'd been any closer to the campaign office's door, I was sure she would have done a shoulder-tilting breeze-by right past us.

"Mayor Reed suggested we talk to you." It was a bald-faced lie. I wasn't proud of it, but the look Skylar held in her bourbon-brown eye made me equally happy to mess with her day.

"Oh!" Curiosity
