Miran: WHERE ARE YOU????

Me: Still hiding. I’m safe.

Miran: I’ll be there soon. Less than 10 mins, Backup is there and they’re coming in.

Me: Okay.

Five minutes passed.

I hoped backup would come soon, and it was a relief to know they were close.

I would get out then.

Then, the door behind me slammed open.

A small noise left my mouth as I hit the floor hard on impact. My forehead hit it, making me dizzy. I reached up with a hand to touch my forehead on instinct. It wasn’t bleeding, but I knew it would soon sport a purple bruise.

My shoulders tensed, and I quickly turned around, pointing my gun at the intruder. My eyes narrowed and flashed at the thin, tall inmate in the orange jumpsuit.

He looked startled at the gun pointing at him.

“Back the fuck off,” I muttered at him. “Or I will shoot.”

I didn’t want to kill someone else today, but I would.

The inmate quickly backed away and ran. His footsteps echoing down the empty hallway. I breathed hard through my nose as I ran a hand through my messy black mane. I knew that I needed to change my hiding place. He would probably inform his friends, and they would come after me like vultures.

I peeked outside and saw that it was still empty, and I needed to head in the direction of the exit. I held my gun to my chest, and with my eyes darting back and forth, I was soon at the end of the hallway. I peeked a glance in both directions and the coast looked clear, so I stepped outside. I followed the exit signs but then I heard loud, rapid footsteps approaching from behind me.

I tensed up, alarmed but just then something hard hit the back of my head. I groaned at the noise, reaching instinctively for the injury. My eyes had closed at the impact, and I fell into unconsciousness, dropping onto the floor.

I didn’t know how long I was out, maybe minutes.

My eyes blinked and adjusted to the light in the room. I lay on the floor, and the back of my head throbbed, so I rubbed it, trying to ease the pain. My eyes fell on the hard, cement floor. Something was off. These weren’t the tiled floors of the hallway. I was no longer there. My eyes tilted up as I stared at the gray, empty walls. I was near a lumpy mattress before my eyes took in the metal bars.

I was in a cell.

Several inmates blocked my exit.

I was caged with no escape.

I reached for the gun, but it was no longer with me. I searched through my jacket for my taser, but it was missing too. Even my badge was gone.

They took it away.

I slowly rose to my feet, leaning heavily against the cell wall. They must have brought me to the cell after knocking me out. Inmates surrounded me. I breathed hard as I did a head count and at least a dozen inmates were around me, although thankfully they were keeping their distance from me.
