The only sign that there had been a photo shoot at the fountain half an hour later was one lone model whoâd pulled a book from her bag, sipped on a coffee sheâd bought from a cart nearby, and sat on a bench to read now that sheâd changed back into warmer clothes. Hadley and Tyler sat along the edge of the fountain as Paul talked on the phone a few yards away.
âYou didnât know about the cat either?â Paulâs deep voice carried.
He was talking with Bennett, hoping Elleâs twin brother could give him some guidance as to what they should do with the mysterious cat she owned.
âWhat about your parents?â Paul asked, pausing as he waited for the answer. âOkay. Iâll do that. Thank you, Bennett.â
Approaching Hadley and Tyler, Paul let out a tired sigh. âNo one in her family knew about the cat. But Bennett asked if we could bring it back to the valley with us. I need to talk with this Rafe guy.â
âShe hated Suncoast,â Tyler said, still stuck on what theyâd talked with Anthony about. âI didnât know her all that well, but I knew that for sure. She practically spit anytime she would talk about them.â
âAdele was able to get the same name out of that paparazzi, so that checks out.â Hadley tapped her toes as she thought.
Paul dragged in a slow breath. âProving that someone hired a hit is one of the more difficult things to do in law enforcement. But I have to at least try while weâre here in the city.â Turning to his sister, Paul added, âI need you to go to Elleâs apartment and see if you can get that cat of hers. Iâll call Hillary and ask if she can meet you there.â
Hadley nodded, happy to have a job. Sheâd felt a little out of her depth that day with all the talk of modeling contracts, CEOs, and the possibility of hired killers. But cats were her safe space. She could handle helping a cat.
âI want you to bring Tyler with you,â Paul added, deflating Hadleyâs feelings of comfort with his words.
Hadleyâs eyes flashed to meet her brotherâs in protest. But he met her with a serious stare.
âI donât trust him much further than I can throw himââPaul glared at Tyler as if to remind him that he was very much capable of throwing himââbut he knows the building, and I donât want you to go alone.â
Clenching her jaw, Hadley faked a smile. âFine. Weâll pick up Martini. You figure out if this Rafe guy made any slipups that we can use against him.â She stood, patting the back of her pants in case any small pebbles from the concrete fountain were stuck there. âLetâs go.â
