The only sign that there had been a photo shoot at the fountain half an hour later was one lone model who’d pulled a book from her bag, sipped on a coffee she’d bought from a cart nearby, and sat on a bench to read now that she’d changed back into warmer clothes. Hadley and Tyler sat along the edge of the fountain as Paul talked on the phone a few yards away.

“You didn’t know about the cat either?” Paul’s deep voice carried.

He was talking with Bennett, hoping Elle’s twin brother could give him some guidance as to what they should do with the mysterious cat she owned.

“What about your parents?” Paul asked, pausing as he waited for the answer. “Okay. I’ll do that. Thank you, Bennett.”

Approaching Hadley and Tyler, Paul let out a tired sigh. “No one in her family knew about the cat. But Bennett asked if we could bring it back to the valley with us. I need to talk with this Rafe guy.”

“She hated Suncoast,” Tyler said, still stuck on what they’d talked with Anthony about. “I didn’t know her all that well, but I knew that for sure. She practically spit anytime she would talk about them.”

“Adele was able to get the same name out of that paparazzi, so that checks out.” Hadley tapped her toes as she thought.

Paul dragged in a slow breath. “Proving that someone hired a hit is one of the more difficult things to do in law enforcement. But I have to at least try while we’re here in the city.” Turning to his sister, Paul added, “I need you to go to Elle’s apartment and see if you can get that cat of hers. I’ll call Hillary and ask if she can meet you there.”

Hadley nodded, happy to have a job. She’d felt a little out of her depth that day with all the talk of modeling contracts, CEOs, and the possibility of hired killers. But cats were her safe space. She could handle helping a cat.

“I want you to bring Tyler with you,” Paul added, deflating Hadley’s feelings of comfort with his words.

Hadley’s eyes flashed to meet her brother’s in protest. But he met her with a serious stare.

“I don’t trust him much further than I can throw him”—Paul glared at Tyler as if to remind him that he was very much capable of throwing him—“but he knows the building, and I don’t want you to go alone.”

Clenching her jaw, Hadley faked a smile. “Fine. We’ll pick up Martini. You figure out if this Rafe guy made any slipups that we can use against him.” She stood, patting the back of her pants in case any small pebbles from the concrete fountain were stuck there. “Let’s go.”
