Chapter 9

It was late afternoon before Edward’s car finally pulled up in front of Cat’s cottage.

“Looks like you have company,” said Edward pointing to the strange car parked beside Cat’s cottage. Bringing his car to a stop on the lane, he climbed out and opened the back door letting The O’Brien and Marian out.

“Can I run over and see Caitlin and Miss Maureen while we’re here?” pleaded Marian.

“Sure,” replied Edward.

Quickly scanning the area, Cat called to Marian as she started across the lane, “Why don’t you take The O’Brien with you. I’m sure he’d love a chance to stretch his legs after being cramped up in the back seat for so long.”

Cat quickly gave The O’Brien the hand signal which he’d been taught and he immediately left her side and ambled over to where Marian waited. Looking over at Edward solemnly, Cat remarked, “With two murders so close to home, it might be a good idea not to let Marian go wandering off on her own for a while.”

Edward suddenly looked concerned but before he could call Marian back Cat put her hand on his arm and nodded in the direction of the giant of a dog standing close to the young girl’s side. “You don’t have to worry about her right now. She is with The O’Brien and he won’t leave her. Believe me, she’ll come to no harm with him beside her.”

As Marian and The O’Brien entered Maureen’s cottage, Jeff came bursting out the door with a face resembling a thunder storm. Before either Cat or Edward even had a chance to greet him he shouted, “Where the Hell have you been? Garda Burke has been here looking for you and I’ve been worried sick.”

Seeing the anguished look of worry on his face, Cat wrapped her arms around her best friend saying, “I’m so sorry Jeff. I had no idea you were coming or I would have been here to greet you.”

Feeling contrite now, Jeff mumbled, “You didn’t know because I didn’t tell you. I heard on the news at home about the murder on the boat and was more than a little irritated you didn’t call me as soon as it happened. Then I started worrying about you. So I booked a flight and came over.”

Giving him another tight squeeze Cat replied, “I’m so sorry Jeff. I had no idea it would make the news in the States or I would have phoned you. Besides it doesn’t have anything to do with me so I’m not in any danger.”

Holding him at arm’s length she smiled up into his worried eyes and said, “And you’ve been drinking, haven’t you?”

Looking down and nodding his head like a naughty child, who’d been caught with his hand in the cookie jar, Jeff replied, “If you think I’m in bad shape, you should see Maureen.”

This time it was Edward’s turn to react as he sprinted across the lane yelling back to them, “I hope I’m not too late. I don’t want Maureen to ask Marian about what happened today.
