Maximus slept quite peacefully until what would have been his usual time for morning. He released the warm body in his embrace and sat up to stretch. The he simply sat. He couldnât rid himself of a silly smile.
âReally?â Lurz said. âYouâre okay with everything?â
âWhatâs the matter, Lurz? You seemed to like the idea of my being in love before.â
âTake a look at your love. Heâs a man again.â
Maximus glanced over at him. His smile remained steadfast. âYes. Holding him wasnât difficult. It was no longer about satisfying lust at that pointâjust being close. I may yet grow used to him.â
âFine, well, I assume we donât need to go to the brothel now. You should change our heading for planet Astralla 6.â
Maximus frowned. He scratched his stubbled chin. âI need a shower.â
âChange the coordinates first. Weâre wasting fuel.â
Maximus headed for the bathroom. He got to douse himself with hot water for ten minutes before the other shoe dropped.
âWhatâs going on, Maximus?â
He expelled a breath. âI donât see any reason to continue our mission.â
âHow can you say that?â
âI sought revenge, but then this enigmatic creature came into my life. Now Iâve discovered the perfect lover for me. I control him. Thatâs how I need it to be. Iâve achieved so much by myself. It thrills me to think of what I can do with him by my side. I even look forward to sharing it all with him.â
âThatâs wonderful, Maximus, but how does it change your goal with the Troopers?â
He clucked his tongue. âI wanted revenge. What I got instead was distasteful brutality. Now I see it was all unnecessary anyway. I have only to destroy the central computers of each base and the soldiers will be free from the mind control.â
âYes! You donât have to kill them anymore. So itâs no longer âdistasteful.ââ
âItâs no longer revenge! Itâs turned into idiotic benevolent drivel. I donât give a damn about these people. Why would I ever spend my life freeing them? Whatâs the profit for me? Whatâs to gain?â
That shut Lurz up. Maximus smiled and soaped his hair.
âHow about what you might lose?â
Of course he had more to say. When would he ever win with this thing?
âSuch as?â
âXenith lent you Zolabarth to destroy the Troopers. If you give up youâll be lucky if all she does is take him back. More likely sheâll kill you the way she probably should have from the beginning.â
Maximus fumed. âHow many millions of miles are we from Xenithâs space?â
âIt doesnât matter. Sheâs a god.â
âOh, rubbage.â
âShe must be able to control him no matter where he is. How could she lend out Rig-mertians otherwise?â
âPssh.â
âWhy donât you ask him what sheâll do? Right now youâre acting like a spoiled child whoâll change the facts however he needs in order to get what he wants.â
âI donât have to change anything. I always get what I want.â
âThis time getting what you want means keeping your promise to Xenith.â
Maximus grit his teeth. He hated when Lurz won their arguments.
His ire dissipated once he emerged from the bathroom.
