Maximus slept quite peacefully until what would have been his usual time for morning. He released the warm body in his embrace and sat up to stretch. The he simply sat. He couldn’t rid himself of a silly smile.

‘Really?’ Lurz said. ‘You’re okay with everything?’

‘What’s the matter, Lurz? You seemed to like the idea of my being in love before.’

‘Take a look at your love. He’s a man again.’

Maximus glanced over at him. His smile remained steadfast. ‘Yes. Holding him wasn’t difficult. It was no longer about satisfying lust at that point—just being close. I may yet grow used to him.’

‘Fine, well, I assume we don’t need to go to the brothel now. You should change our heading for planet Astralla 6.’

Maximus frowned. He scratched his stubbled chin. ‘I need a shower.’

‘Change the coordinates first. We’re wasting fuel.’

Maximus headed for the bathroom. He got to douse himself with hot water for ten minutes before the other shoe dropped.

‘What’s going on, Maximus?’

He expelled a breath. “I don’t see any reason to continue our mission.”

‘How can you say that?’

“I sought revenge, but then this enigmatic creature came into my life. Now I’ve discovered the perfect lover for me. I control him. That’s how I need it to be. I’ve achieved so much by myself. It thrills me to think of what I can do with him by my side. I even look forward to sharing it all with him.”

‘That’s wonderful, Maximus, but how does it change your goal with the Troopers?’

He clucked his tongue. “I wanted revenge. What I got instead was distasteful brutality. Now I see it was all unnecessary anyway. I have only to destroy the central computers of each base and the soldiers will be free from the mind control.”

‘Yes! You don’t have to kill them anymore. So it’s no longer “distasteful.”’

“It’s no longer revenge! It’s turned into idiotic benevolent drivel. I don’t give a damn about these people. Why would I ever spend my life freeing them? What’s the profit for me? What’s to gain?”

That shut Lurz up. Maximus smiled and soaped his hair.

‘How about what you might lose?’

Of course he had more to say. When would he ever win with this thing?

“Such as?”

‘Xenith lent you Zolabarth to destroy the Troopers. If you give up you’ll be lucky if all she does is take him back. More likely she’ll kill you the way she probably should have from the beginning.’

Maximus fumed. “How many millions of miles are we from Xenith’s space?”

‘It doesn’t matter. She’s a god.’

“Oh, rubbage.”

‘She must be able to control him no matter where he is. How could she lend out Rig-mertians otherwise?’

“Pssh.”

‘Why don’t you ask him what she’ll do? Right now you’re acting like a spoiled child who’ll change the facts however he needs in order to get what he wants.’

“I don’t have to change anything. I always get what I want.”

‘This time getting what you want means keeping your promise to Xenith.’

Maximus grit his teeth. He hated when Lurz won their arguments.

His ire dissipated once he emerged from the bathroom.
