Chapter 10

We ended up with fourteen entries for the preliminary round, five women and nine men. I decided to simply create two groups of seven, with the final three from each group going on to the finals the following day. The trick was going to not only be one of the last three cars running but to be in good enough shape to compete in the finals. Since Pepper had technically won the race, it was decided that the groups would be coed, as originally voted on by the committee.

I made certain that Boomer and Pandora were put into different groups. Other than that, I randomly picked two women and four men for each of the two groups. Up first was the group that consisted of Pandora, Jaqui, Rizo, Masher, two of the Pencil Triplets, and Bruiser. The second group would be Boomer, Jugs, Zelda, Crusher, the third Pencil Triplet, Crank, and Big Boy Branson.

“I thought the mood would be somber after what happened to Pepper,” Levi commented, “but there’s an explosive energy like always.”

“Most of the people in the crowd didn’t even know Pepper. I think the crash has actually made the whole weekend somehow more exciting for the average derby spectator. And those drivers who were close to Pepper are looking at the derby as a sort of stress relief. I’m predicting that the crashes will be more explosive than normal. I just hope we have three cars from each group left in good enough condition to compete tomorrow.”

“And if we don’t?”

I shrugged. “We’ll compete with what we have.”

Unlike the cars that had been on display in town and had participated in the classic car parade, the derby cars were old and heavy, with all the glass removed and roll-over bars installed. Although powerful vehicles, the cars were cosmetically challenged. Still, in spite of the dents that had been pounded out more than once, many of the cars, including Pandora’s pink Galaxy, had been painted to demonstrate the personality of the driver.

“Did Dezee ever show up?” Levi asked.

“Not so far. It’s really strange that he’d just take off unless he was involved in the tampering, but everyone who knows him agrees that he really doesn’t seem to be the type to do such a thing.”

“Sometimes it’s the quiet ones who have something to hide.”

“Maybe, but it seems odd that he’d leave everything including his car behind.”

“You mentioned that he was close to Pepper. Maybe he knew that Pepper was the one driving Pandora’s car and when it crashed he went off to mourn.”

“He wasn’t at the race.”

“That you saw. Can you honestly say that you saw everyone who was there? I know I can’t remember every detail of every minute. He might have shown up late.”

“Maybe. Here come the drivers.”

The cars were already parked at the starting point, within the boundaries of the makeshift derby track we’d set up in one of Old Man Johnson’s unused pastures. Traditionally, we’d used the fairgrounds in Bryton Lake, but there had
