LATER. Hey Anjali —Can you read this if I write it on a computer? I have to use my father’s to write a piece of fiction for Pritchard. What do you think of this?

Scene: Confused GIRL thinks that maybe she is getting sick during sixth period. She moans her way to the nurse. The school corridors are empty and damp. The footsteps echo like a lonely cry. THE NURSE says to go in quietly because another student is there resting. THE GRIL opens the door to the back room, and sees THE BOY lying on the hard purple cot. He opens one eye and winks. THE GIRL isn’t sure how to act. THE NURSE motions for THE GIRL to lie down. THE GIRL doesn’t want to because it’s way too wierd to lie down in front of THE BOY. THE GIRL sits.)

THE NURSE: I’ll go get you a glass of water.

(THE BOY waits for tHE NURSE to leave.)

THE BOY ( A little mad ): Why are you avoiding me,

Meredith? What’s going on? Are you mad at me or something?

(THE GIRL is even more confused. She lies down and looks at the cieling so she doesn’t have to look at THE BOY. She can’t tell him why she’s been avoiding him. If she tells him she thinks that he was making fun of her by teasing that he LIKES HER that’s the same as admitting that she ever thought for a moment that it was possible that he could LIKE HER. That is just too embarasing for words. THE GIRL says nothing.

THE GIRL:

(THE BOY rubs his nose angrily ).

THE BOY: If you’re mad at me you should at least tell me what I did!

THE GIRL: ( without meaning to, really. It was like I couldn’t stop myself, it just blurted out. ) Were you making fun of me?

THE BOY: WHAT?????

THE GIRL: Were you making fun of me with that card???

THE BOY ( Throwing up his hands ): God, Wendy was right! You’re crazy.

THE GIRL: See, that’s what I mean! I bet you’re always making fun of me with Wendy Mathinson!! But I don’t care because she’s a DRIED PIECE OF SNOT and she always laughs at me and I don’t know how you can be friends with her unless you’re a snot too!

THE BOY: What are you talking about??? Are you mental or something?

THE GIRL: FQBRDEGAFRAG! 1

THE BOY: You think you’re so smart, but you don’t know me at all.

And THE BOY, miraculously cured, stalks out of the nurse’s office, and THE GIRL, miraculously sick, lies down until THE NURSE calls her mother and says she better come pick THE GIRL up.

THE END

1 I don’t know what she was saying either.

My Canteen and I

The hot sand burned my throat and my eyes glazed over as I reached for my canteen that should’ve held water. It did not. It was as dry as my mouth, dry as the sand that surrounded us for miles. We were alone, my canteen
