BREATHING AND CONSCIOUSNESS
To breathe is to live; deep breathing can also help consciousness and cleansing. Appropriate breathing can help to distribute the energy that builds up during a yoni massage, thereby increasing our consciousness, facilitating inner cleansing, and generating energy. We can positively influence the transformation of our sexual energy with our imagination and certain exercises.
Conscious breathing allows us to experience life as it happens, moment to moment. Our body and our consciousness melt together to form a unified whole. The rhythm and depth of the breath stand in close relation to our physical, emotional, and spiritual health. When we pay attention to breathing as a process, we will quickly note that it occupies a place somewhere between our conscious and subconscious awareness and thus forms a bridge between these two parts of our being. This middle space makes breathing an ideal arena for studying the practical and experience-oriented part of consciousness.
Breathing is subconsciously regulated by the brain stem. Although we can consciously influence our breath by increasing or decreasing respiration, the multilayered sequence and coordination of events that regular breathing requires would be impossible to accomplish consciously. Breathing also influences the heart rate. When we hold our breath for an extended period of time, our heart rate lowers, giving the heart muscle a longer rest period.
Deep and conscious breathing causes an activation of the nervous system—just as sexual touch does. To some extent, the respiratory and sexual arousal systems work together. Yet it is more difficult to focus erotic energy than it is to focus the breath. When we hold our breath, our erotic energy continues to flow, spreading throughout our bodies and emanating from within to the outside. On the other hand, we can use our breath to soften our erotic energy and make it flow, allowing us to steer it more consciously. Just as an oven creates heat in a house, the yoni creates heat in our bodies. In this sense, our breathing can be compared to the heating system that distributes the heat throughout the house, circulating arousal throughout the entire body.2
If a woman does not pay attention to her breathing when she is touched, then her attention will wander where it always has. For example, if a young person feels guilty while masturbating, her attention is absorbed by thoughts of shame, which impedes the free flow of sexual energy. Conscious breathing thus offers a chance to change typical sexual behavior and thought patterns and to focus attention solely on sensations and the body’s own messages.3
By breathing consciously, we enter new spaces of perception. We are able to look at our behavior patterns, blockages, problems, and thought patterns from a different perspective—from another level of consciousness—which changes their energy and allows us to envision ways of resolving them. Certain problems cannot be solved by running away; the more we try to leave these difficulties behind, the more destructive their effects will become in our lives. Instead, we can learn to look at them from a different perspective.
