EIGHT

Ward and Jade continued traveling westward. They traveled during the day and slept in the trees at night for their protection from any unexpected danger. They traveled mostly through forest but also through sections of open land. After traveling in the new world for a small number of days and feeling safe from any danger, they abandoned sleeping in the trees and spent their nights in their campsite sleeping on the ground.

The days and nights passed without incident, also without finding any sign of human life. As they traveled on, they were always with the thought of finding people in their searching and always surprised at not finding anyone. After more days of traveling through the forest, when on this particular day of traveling with the bright sun in the clear blue sky, they unexpectedly came upon a circular clearing in the forest that was human designed and landscaped. Immediately they came to a halt and stood at the edge of the clearing just behind the circle of the surrounding trees. Directly in the center of the clearing was a small circular garden pond that was about six feet in diameter and was surrounded by a smooth white stone rim. The sun was shining brightly above in the blue sky, with the sun’s reflection directly in the center of the circular garden pond.

Ward and Jade were both excited by the sight of the garden pond. Being human designed suggested there were people nearby, possibly somewhere in the surrounding forest. They continued standing behind the trees carefully looking over the circular clearing. The clearing was carefully designed and mostly trimmed, but with some overgrowth indicating that it hadn’t been recently maintained. Standing behind the safety of the trees to stay hidden, they checked the forest surrounding the clearing for any sign of human life. Not seeing anyone or a dwelling of any kind in the surrounding forest, they cautiously moved out from behind the circle of trees and went into the clearing. They approached the garden pond for a closer inspection while remaining watchful of the surrounding area, not wanting to be surprised if there were people about in the forest.

Ward and Jade stopped a few feet from the garden pond. They continued checking the surrounding forest, still concerned and worried for their safety. Being exposed and easily seen in the clearing made them nervous, even as the forest was quiet and peaceful with no sign of anything unusual among the trees.

“There must be people around here somewhere,” said Jade speaking in a low voice.

“Yes, I agree,” said Ward while looking in among the trees. “Either we are going to find them, or they are going to find us. I would hope that we find them first because we don’t know who they could be and what we would be up against.”

Feeling confident they were not being watched, they inspected the garden pond with the reflection of the sun in the center. Next to where Jade was standing, a small green vine started growing out from the ground and began wrapping around her boot.
