On the third day, I wrestled mostly with hunger—for both food and flesh. I’d even forbid any servants from entering the chamber at all, not even to bring fresh water or to empty my chamber pot. I knew I was acting like a madman, but I didn’t trust myself around anyone. It wasn’t that I couldn’t go a few days without eating, but I knew if I gave into one, I would give into the other. I called through the door at the servants, telling them to make sure that none of the girls passed by too closely so that I didn’t smell them.

This was the worst I’d had to battle my lust. I’d always had it with me, now for several months. I didn’t view it as evil, but it was another part of my life that I couldn’t control, and I once again recognized my folly. I hadn’t even tried to control it. Not really. Even when I’d been attracted Sarina and she had been my prisoner, I had sought out Ilana to comfort me. And when I had been attracted to Wren, I’d used Ilana and Sarina’s bodies as a substitute.

The self-reflection wasn’t much fun, and although I didn’t doubt their love for me, I felt a certain amount of guilt at how I had used them.

By the end of the third day, I mostly sat with my eyes closed, facing the open window or the fire which I had left burning. The wood had been consumed long before, but it was an enchanted fire and didn’t need any fuel.

That night, I began experimenting with pulling out small balls of fire and allowing them to float around the room, careful to watch that they didn’t scorch anything that could then catch fire on its own. I didn’t doubt my ability to put out a fire, but I didn’t want to start anything, and I didn’t want anyone to know what I’d been doing. I watched the fire, turning it from yellow and red to blue and green. And then I tried an experiment with my bedding, levitating it up off the floor and setting fire to the corner. But at the same time, I shielded it from the flames, and smiled when I watched the magical fire burn over the fur and the straw without consuming them.

Then I went to the corner and got my sword, sitting down with it and touching the blade that was imbued with elven runes. I fed fire into those runes, watching them glow as if from within.

That was cool, but didn’t seem to be of any particular use, so I let the fire fade.

I didn’t sleep at all that night, but spent the remaining hours of my isolation practicing magic, watching the fire, and even contemplating my role in the world. I didn’t have any more thoughts of death, but I knew that they weren’t gone for good. It would take much more practice on my part to turn away that evil inside me.
