I didnât let a split second pass. The second the King began yelling, I ran.
There were dozens of guards in the rest of the palace. I couldnât go that way. At the very back of the room, there was a door that Iâd seen servants go in and out during breakfast that morning. It was almost completely hidden, but it was the best chance I had. Before the King finished his command, I had already sprung into motion.
The guards around me didnât process what was happening until I was halfway through the room. Their armor clanged behind me as they followed. I ran around the dais where the King and Hayle were shouting at the guards to get me. I didnât know what would happen if they caught me, but I didnât have any desire to figure that out.
It didnât occur to me until I was about four steps away from the door that it could be locked, but it was too late to change my mind. I thanked the Lord when it wasnât. The door pushed open easily and opened up to a large room with rugs and banners and the tables from earlier. The walls were lined with doors, probably to other rooms, and there were stairs going both up and down.
Luckily for me, I was small and wearing robes rather than the broad-shouldered guards wearing metal armor behind me. That was an advantage. I squeezed in the small crevice between two of the tables. There was another one on the other side that was set up, ready to be eaten at, and I jumped over it. It wasnât a big deterrent, and they could run around the edge of the room and get to where I was.
But before they could do that, I darted for the nearest staircase. I wasnât sure what that would achieve. The second floor was just as much a trap as the rest of the castle, but it was one of the precious few options at the moment, so I took it.
As I made my way up the stairs, I could hear the guardsâ armor crash together as they tried and failed to squeeze through the small crevice like I had. A few of them decided to run around the large room, but by the time they made it halfway, I was on the second floor.
It was the same hall Iâd seen earlier that day but from the other end. Thankfully the ground was solid, so they couldnât watch where I was going from the first floor. I decided to run through the hall, trying all the doors I could. If I was lucky, maybe one had a trellis I could climb down. If I was really lucky, one room would have a private staircase. At the very least, Iâd take my chances with a window.
The first two doors I tried were locked. The third opened, but it was a closet with no windows. I didnât need to hide. I needed an escape.
