Chapter 11
Ryder knew what it was like to be lost.
He walked in stride with Hunter and Natalie, all of them staying as close as possible to the shops and restaurants that lined the edge of the streets.
Ryder was still mesmerized by how fast the city he had once called home had fallen apart. Each street was littered with dead bodies, the smell of burnt flesh and gasoline as pervasive in the air as oxygen itself.
The drone strikes that had hammered on since the second this madness began had finally started to quiet down. The desperate screams could still be heard every few seconds. In fact, in their short time navigating the streets that were clogged with cars, debris, and shattered glass, they had passed several people dying on the ground who begged for mercy.
The sight scarred Ryder and reaggravated the wounds he had tried to bury years ago. He thought about the Final War, he thought about his family and friends, and most of all he thought about his father.
As they made another turn onto a larger, more crowded street, Ryder was struck by the calmness. Despite the fires raging on in hundreds of surrounding buildings, the streets were eerily empty. The shops and restaurants appeared to have already been looted, with all the stranded motorists having fled inside to the buildings that were yet to be destroyed.
Or they were already dead.
However, this brief moment of silence allowed Ryder to drift off into the memories of his past that tugged at his mind incessantly.
He remembered the first time in his life that he stared at a problem and couldnât find any answers. It was the day his dad disappeared.
His mother had reported it to the police, and even the local news station picked up a story on him, but no one had any clues as to his whereabouts.
He was later presumed dead when they found his body washed up on the shore in Mount Sinai Harbor.
Ryder never believed the stories, though.
He always knew that his dad had to be out there somewhere.
He figured his dad just wanted an escape from the world and that he likely moved out to a cabin in the dunes of Montauk far away from the hustle and bustle of the suburban communities of New York City. Thatâs why Ryder left in the middle of the night on his bike, determined to make the trek from his house on the North Shore all the way out to the furthermost tip of Long Island.
Once he got out there, he remembered visiting the Lighthouse, the place he was intrinsically drawn to as the spot his father was hiding. He found no such evidence of his whereabouts. It was then that Ryder made a decision.
He could give up hope like everyone else.
Or he could keep looking.
He chose the latter. His plan was to spend days biking from house to house, asking the residents if anyone had seen a man who looked like his father. However, his plan was shut
