canoe is empty, but there is a. faster and easier way. Maybe you thought I was joking when I said you would need to stand, walk, and jump in a canoe. The idea is to jump, spin 180°, and land with your feet spread and braced for downstream travel. The trick is not to jump very high. This takes balance and practice, but it is taster and safer than trying to turn a 16' canoe around in a rocky rapids. Sometimes there is not enough room to turn a canoe, but there is always room to turn yourself
Going upstream you had to push; downstream you snub. Plant the pole forward to slow your descent. Do not let the canoe pick up too
much speed. This is partially to give you more time to react and partially to simplify control. As long as the canoe is moving slower than the current, the force of the water washing against the side can be used to keep the deep end pointing downstream and to move the canoe from side to side across the current. Experiment to get a feel for downstream poling and, as you gain experience, try faster water. With time you should be able to handle Class I rapids with short stretches of more difficult water.
The major drawback to poling is that poles get stuck. That is the reason polers carry paddles. If the pole sticks in flat water or going upstream, give it one or two hard yanks before you let go of it. Remember you are trying to jerk something off the bottom while standing up in a canoe. Down
