First Body of the Weekend

On the way to the stairs Felicity got a call on her phone; her master of ceremonies needed her.

‘Go,’ I reassured her. ‘We’ve got this. I’ll find you later. Go fix this wedding.’ She gratefully hurried away in a different direction, but as she left us, I changed my mind about where we should go next.

‘Shall we check on the others?’ I asked.

‘You mean our bride and groom?’ clarified Alistair.

Not breaking my stride, I said, ‘And the best man and page boy too.’

Lieutenant Pippin wasn’t the page boy at all, of course. He’s a grown man, not someone’s child even though he does look barely old enough to shave. The page boy thing was a joke the other lieutenants were playing on him. Of the four, we had bride, groom, and best man. Pippin made the mistake of asking what his role might be.

I knocked first on the room for the big Austrian, Lieutenant Schneider. We heard a rumble from within, followed a few seconds later by the door opening.

‘Hey, everyone,’ he beamed out at us, throwing the door wide in a welcoming gesture. ‘Are you heading down to breakfast?’

His question served as a stark reminder that Alistair and I never got ours. I jinked my wrist to check my watch. It was twenty-five past nine. They stopped serving breakfast at ten so we either hurried up and got there or we got nothing until some point this afternoon.

My stomach rumbled its emptiness. Shooting a glance at Alistair, I said, ‘I suppose we ought to give it another go.’

‘I could use a cup of coffee if nothing else,’ he agreed.

Schneider hooked his keys from the edge of the desk in his room and shut the door behind him. A few doors along, another door opened, Deepa poking her head out.

‘I thought I heard you,’ she left the room, Barbie exiting behind her.

Waving, my blonde friend said, ‘Hey, Patty. Hey, guys. Did everyone get a good sleep?’

Her question prompted an explanation of the early morning events the late risers were not privy to. Since we were gathered in the corridor, Schneider did his best man duty and knocked on the groom’s door.

Pippin poked his head out of his room one door along, but there was no answer from Baker. A sliver of worry chilled my blood.

Deepa poked my arm. Getting my attention, she said, ‘You were telling us something about the other wedding. I take it something happened in the night. Did someone get mercilessly drunk and end up in hospital? Barbie and I snuck down to spy on the people in the pool and they were all hammered. We just went for a little celebrity spotting. All the big names had gone by then though.’

‘Except that soccer player you like,’ Barbie reminded her.

Deepa rolled her eyes. ‘It’s called football here, but yes, okay, Lennie Larsson was there and so were a few of his fellow England players.’

I heard everything they said, but my eyes never left Baker’s door.
