Setting the Stage for Laboratory Research

In my dissertation days, finding women to interview behind closed doors about their peak sexual experiences had been both simple and serendipitous. But locating women who are willing to travel to a steaming city on a Thursday or Friday afternoon in the middle of summer to come off to their erotic fantasies while hooked up to monitors that measure their physiological responses turns out to be a whole other ball of wax.

Eventually, through colleagues in the sex field, we manage to luck into a network of women who are eager not only to lend their bodies and minds to science, but also to recommend their friends. Suzanne is a very well-recommended friend. Articulate and messianic about getting the word out to other women, she is walking proof that it is possible to learn extraordinary control over the orgasmic process. “Just tell me which chakra you’d like to measure,” she announces as she settles onto the decorative pillows with which we’ve softened the hospital bed and is being hooked up to monitors. “I can orgasm up and down all the energy centers. I don’t know how much time you’ve got, but I won’t have any problem keeping things going all afternoon.”

Patently, Suzanne feels more comfortable at this moment of research than I. It isn’t that I am nervous about witnessing her thinking-woman’s calisthenics. In fact I am wildly curious, and quite confident she can do her thing as stated. But will I be able to do mine? After all, she’s been orgasming up and down her chakras for years, but this is my very first whack at bona-fide laboratory research. Even though she is not the first subject whose responses we are measuring, I still have some performance anxiety about the mechanics of it all. I have bought a white doctor’s coat on the trip down to Rutgers to help me get into the role, but how much is that really going to help?

Suzanne is dressed in a pink cotton skirt and print blouse and looks like a well-scrubbed sorority housemother. I slide into a chair beside her bed and explain the sequence of the study we are about to do.

There are three ten-minute segments, with five-minute resting periods between each segment. With an additional resting period at the beginning and end, the experimental part of the study will take about an hour.

Her job, I inform her, will be contained in these three segments. First, she will listen to a ten-minute guided-imagery tape,6 allowing herself—if possible—to come to orgasm without touch. Second, she will stimulate herself genitally for ten minutes, bringing herself—if possible—to orgasm with touch. In the final ten minutes, she will use her own internal imagery to bring herself—if possible—to orgasm, no touching. I indicate that I will be interrupting her throughout the sequences to take measurements.

“No problem,” she says with a big smile. “What do all those machines do?” She gesticulates in my direction. So many wires crisscross my space that despite the white lab coat I feel like Lucille Ball about to launch into a telephone operator routine.
