MADDENED BY HER PRESENCE, Paxton spent day and night in an endless freefall. He used her and was used by her in a toxic mix, aware of the descent of it, the new edge in her actions, the quake in her voice. Yet he couldn’t cease without beginning, couldn’t stop without partaking once more. He was an addict and her the best fix. In that same manner, he ate little, dressed not at all, and took her again and again.

Collapsed together, two days in, he slept at last. He wakened to the buzz of his cell, and turning it over, set it aside, scooting back on the bed and pulling Isobel to him.

She draped over his chest, her nails biting into his side, her hair tickling the skin around her fingertips, as contradictory as she was. He worried, wondering if their hasty actions had exacted too high a cost. She seemed laggard, lethargic, her words slurred, her movements ponderous.

“You should really answer it,” Isobel mumbled, her lips moving moist on his chest.

Paxton exhaled. “Probably.” He was more inclined to think he shouldn’t have turned it on at all.

“They know we’re together by now, and I’m sure, think me a tramp.”

Grasping her chin, he turned her face toward his. “You are my wife, and I have no regrets.”

“No, you probably don’t.”

Anger. Where did that come from? And anger at who? Him or herself? His worry grew. “Isobel ...”

“I’m sorry. Forget, I said it.” She waved one hand outward. “My perspective on relationships isn’t good.”

Shifting his hand to her cheek, he considered her words in the light of what he already knew. “Someone hurt you,” he said.

“Many someones,” she replied. “After my parents died, I went to live with an uncle who ... we’ll say had proclivities toward the young and innocent.”

His breath hissed inward.

“There was also a foster brother when I was twelve, snuck into my room more than once. I didn’t know any better, thought that was how it was done.”

“That isn’t how it’s done,” he replied, “and our marriage is not like that at all. Our union ...”

She twisted away, sitting up. Her hair fell down her naked back. “I wanted you. You wanted me,” she said, her voice odd. “I wanted Paxton Wolfe, the man, but I wanted Paxton Wolfe, the power.” Her fingers clenched, she pounded the mattress hard, and the bed shivered. “It was powerful, and I’m giddy.”

She sounded anything but giddy.

“Still now, if you touch me, I’ll give in. I have to give in. I can’t not give in. I’m drunk on it, this ... this ... feeling at being on top of the world.”

Spinning in place on the bed, she flung herself at him, her mouth seeking his, and thunder in his ears, he succumbed. Like her, he couldn’t not succumb, had, in fact, been giving in to her since the beginning. Star-crossed, ill-fated, once their emotions ran out, what would be left?

Shoving back from him, violent, she pulled free, quick, and left him in place, slipping into the bathroom.
