"This is absurd," Bo said as our tiny new pack set off to capture the one shifter that Luna felt was key to her mission. At first, it took considerable persuasion to get Bo and Thaddeus to accompany us on our journey. But, upon seeing Laurent by my side, their attitude instantly changed.

The situation became even more challenging when they realized we weren't just escorting Laurent somewhere far away from me. I was determined to take this surreal journey with Artemis and a mysterious woman whose eyes shone like sapphires—so it was either come along or remain behind without me. But the possibility of Laurent and me setting off again together was enough to persuade Bo and Thaddeus to join us.

Now that we had begun our journey, it was apparent that neither of them wanted to be here. The air was tense, and I knew their suspicions of Laurent lingered. Yet, despite hiding from me for years since our reunion, Laurent had shown us nothing but loyalty and kindness—he was here because he wanted to help us, not out of obligation or duty, but because our love was enduring.

Although I had no idea where we were headed, Artemis was confident that the route was already mapped out and all we needed to do to reach our destination was stay on course. So we traveled for hours, both in human and shifter form, pushing through the woods with Laurent and Artemis leading us while Thaddeus trudged beside me. Bo usually lagged behind, keeping watch for any danger lurking in the shadows.

At last, we arrived at a secluded meadow where I could clearly make out a small encampment in the distance. As we approached, I could sense a powerful presence emanating from the area—a presence that sent shivers of excitement and dread down my spine. Before I could gather my thoughts, a tall figure emerged from the darkness, stumbling and falling to the ground.

"It can't be," Laurent gasped. "It's the assassin!"

Instantly, his gaze fell upon the hood and scarf removed from the female assassin's face as they lay scattered on the dirt beneath her. Laurent moved quickly to kneel next to the killer, knowing that she had nearly taken his life—and had been hunting me. Despite this, he pressed his hands against the wound desperately to keep her from losing too much blood. His voice was full of sadness as Laurent whispered, "Who has done this to you? Identify the person who employed and tasked you with this work," Laurent probed.

It was clear his question was more than just idle curiosity. The assassin's response would reveal who was attempting to silence her—and who wanted me out of the way. Possibly, whoever had hired the killer might have been incensed by the failed mission and was hunting the assassin herself. She opened her mouth, clearly not taking her loyalty to her deathbed, and barely offered a single word before she died—Petra.

"Wait, what did that mean?" Thaddeus scrambled to ask, hoping Laurent could revive her enough to get a quick explanation.
