Chapter Fourteen
With Monday and the new week, normalcy returned to Islaâs life. She hitched a ride to work in Rafeâs car, as she would be working from the London office that day. But she would need to find transportation of her own to be able to travel between workplaces without relying on the help of others.
âWould it be possible to handle all this from one spot?â she asked Rafe when they were on their way. âItâs all electronic anyway and would save a lot of time.â
âPossibly. We used to have a couple of accountants, so theyâve been separate posts, but Iâm sure Jenny would appreciate it too if she could work from one place. Perhaps even from the manor, now that she has the cub.â He perked, excited. âAnd if we can build a good office space for her there, thereâs no reason why we couldnât build an office for Charly there too.â
âHey! I didnât come to London to be cooped up in some country manor. I might as well have stayed at home.â
He shot her a teasing glance from the corner of his eye. âJamie might like it if you were around more.â
âWeâre not joined at the hip,â she huffed, but she felt a blush rise up her spine.
âYou couldâve fooled me.â
Jamie had spent the night with her again, with more sleeping involved this time, and he had stayed till the morning. It had been wonderfulâand terrifying. They had known each other for less than a week and already it had felt like the most natural thing in the world to wake up next to him.
They had shown up at breakfast together and the teasing had been merciless, but good-natured. Jamie had looked pleased by it, and since she wasnât fragile, she had handled her share of it. The unmarried sentinels had looked happy for the two of them too. It should have delighted her, but instead she had become uneasy. They were behaving as if she would stay forever. But she couldnât do that.
Could she?
âSo what are your intentions towards my brother?â Rafe asked with mock sternness just then, as if reading her mind.
âHot sex. As much of it as possible.â
He snorted a laugh. âIf anyone deserves it, itâs him. But are you sure you donât want anything more?â
âWeâve only met. Itâs a bit too early for forever,â she said, getting a little exasperated. Couldnât she be allowed to enjoy what she had without it getting instantly serious?
âShifters can know with one glance, you know.â
âI know. Thatâs how it was with Brice. But my wolf has shown no interest in anything more serious and neither has his.â She hadnât asked, but she would know.
âFair enough. And a pity too. You would be perfect for him.â
She hesitated, but decided to ask what she really wanted to know. âHis mate was supposed to be perfect for him too. So what happened?â
Rafe made a vague gesture with a hand that was resting on the steering wheel. âI really donât know, apart from that she found living with us difficult.
