Lincoln

I tripped over my feet and grunted as a shrill siren pierced the night air. The pack knew intruders were here. It was only a matter of minutes before the full force of the pack descended.

Dad and probably half the men were away. But the rest of them would be brutal and would put up a fight for anyone who stood in their way. They would kill first and ask questions later. It’s how they were.

Movement to the right caught my attention. I turned on my heel so fast, I nearly fell to the ground from the dizziness washing through me. If Sloane’s brother weren’t holding on to me, I’d have fallen and probably taken her with me. He let me go and took up a protective stance in front of me and his sister.

The other two guys who were with us did the same. I could tell the men were ready to shift at any second by the way that they stood tensed and ready to jump.

My wolf bubbled below the surface, trying to break free, but the fog of the drugs kept him trapped.

A group broke through the trees. I tensed a growl, vibrating low in my throat.

When they saw us, they paused, and one of them put their hands out in front of them. “Whoa, whoa, it’s just us.”

The three guys backed down.

Sloane’s brother, the one who had been helping me, took a step forward. “Where is everyone else?”

One of the guys looked over his shoulder and then back at us with a grim expression. “Some of the girls didn’t want to come. They’re trying to coerce more into joining us.”

I exhaled and briefly closed my eyes. “They’re scared. My father threatened them with horrible things if they tried anything.”

Sloane shared a look with me. My dad intimidated with fear, but he also delivered on his promises. That’s what made him so terrifying.

The brother who had been helping me came back to Sloane and stood in front of her. He put both hands on her shoulders. “Sloane, go with them. The cars aren’t too far away. The rest of us are going to go back for Dad and the other alphas and women.”

Sloane surged forward and wrapped her free arm around her brother’s neck. “Please be careful, Mark.” She looked over his shoulder at the other two. “Brandon and Ian, please stay safe.”

Mark looked at me, giving me a once-over. “Are you going to be able to make it?”

I could tell by the scowl on his face he had his doubts.

I did a quick assessment. I had all the feeling back in my limbs now, so that was a plus. I would crawl out of here if I had to. Luckily, I didn’t think it would come to that. “Yeah, I’m better now. Thank you.”

Mark gave me a look and drew in a shaky breath. “Don’t thank me yet. We’re not out of here yet.”

He motioned for the other two guys to follow him.

They took off running and then leaped, triggering the shift into their wolf forms.
