The coach ride was circuitous, looping around the northern edge of the city before the road turned sharply and began a series of switchbacks in a descent to the lower district. The street leveled, and the coach took them through a market, along narrow streets with small, slender houses, and eventually stopped at a gate along the river. They climbed out, passed through the gate, and descended to the docks. All eyes were drawn to the spectacle less than a thousand feet upriver.

The waterfall roared, white spray swirling in the sunlit afternoon air, refracting into a multi-hued rainbow. It was a majestic sight, the falls hundreds of feet tall and twice as wide. Adyn had never seen anything like it. She stared, transfixed, until a call captured her attention.

Turning toward the voice, she saw Captain Dantello approaching. “I never thought I’d see you again.” The captain shook his head, lifting his hat to scratch behind his ear. “I figured the lot of you were dead by now.” He nodded toward Jace. “Especially you. Chancellor Mor has had a bounty out on you for years.”

“Hello, Captain.” Narine gestured toward the barge. “Tell me, how did you get your barge down here? Just yesterday, it was up there.” She pointed toward the top of the falls.

The man grinned. “You have it wrong. Chancellor Mor owns two barges – one for the upper river and another for the lower. I swapped with Captain Yarrick, who usually commands this craft, since I have…history with you people. He is taking my barge back upstream to Grakal the day after tomorrow.”

Dantello moved closer to Jace, his voice dropping. “Did you really face eight men in the Bowl?”

“He did,” Adyn said. “Eight gladiators, each at least twice his size. Just like that…” She snapped her fingers, “they were all dead.”

Hadnoddon said in his low, grumbling voice, “It was a massacre.”

The captain’s face grew pale as he stepped back. “Oh, um… Well then, I’m glad no confrontation took place when we last met.”

“You should be. Otherwise, you’d be dead.” Adyn’s tone carried a threat.

“Yes.” He kneaded his hands and backed away, noticeably uncomfortable. “Please, come aboard. Your things have been brought to your rooms, and we are ready to depart.”

Jace gave Adyn a questioning look as the captain walked away.

She smirked and shrugged. “May as well use the story to our advantage. We should now encounter little trouble on the trip. Perhaps not until we reach Cor Cordium.”

He snickered. “Good thinking.” A broad grin spread across his face. “I’m not used to others fearing me. It’ll be a nice change.”

Narine took his arm. “Rather than them trying to capture or kill you?”

The thief shrugged. “My line of work offers all sorts of perks.”

She laughed, the pair stepping onto the barge, Adyn and Hodnoddon following.

The moment they stepped on deck, the ropes were untied, and the barge pushed off, oars carrying it from the small bay to the heart of the river. This time, there were no other passengers, allowing Adyn and Hadnoddon to each choose their own room.
