Greed

Much like taking the tower in Cor Cordium, claiming the tower in Sarmak was uneventful and allowed everyone except Priella a chance to rest in the quiet throne room. It was past midnight when the flames awoke, and she stepped to the tower’s edge to peer over the sleeping city.

The breeze from the nearby sea blew her hair into her face. She drew it back with a finger and stared into the night for a moment of reflection, her first opportunity to do so since departing Balmor. Besides, she had never been to the desert wizardom before and did not know if she would ever return. Pausing a moment to look upon its capital city would have little effect on her quest.

The prayers of two wizardoms already fed her magic and left her feeling invincible. The day prior, she had accidentally cut herself while swapping the gem in the obelisk overlooking Lamor. The cut had healed instantly without her having to apply a construct. When she next took Devotion, prayers from across the known world would flow into her, raising her magic beyond imagination. The thought made her stomach flutter, partly from eager anticipation, mostly from dread as to what it might do to her. She had witnessed Thurvin unravel as his power increased. Hers would nearly triple his.

Her gaze drifted to the streets below, enchanted lanterns creating islands of light. She spotted a cluster of guards pointing up at the tower. They wonder at the flame and why it burns something other than the red of their god. Her actions would bring similar confusion to every city she visited, leaving each disconnected from the god worshipped by its citizens for thousands of years. What becomes of the young gods as we disconnect them from the prayers of their people? She wondered if even Vanda knew the answer.

Discarding her musings, she embraced her magic and leapt, arms spread as she plummeted toward the palace roof. She formed a pocket of air under her, slowing her descent. Gently, she lowered herself to a courtyard and stepped off the platform of air, striding along a shadowy walkway to the guard stationed beside the door.

“My Queen!” The man in red and black thumped his chest and opened the door. “I trust all went well.”

“As expected.”

He bent to one knee as she walked past. With a wave of her hand, she dismissed the spell she had placed in his mind, simultaneously erasing the memory of her passing.

She followed the dark corridor back to the receiving hall. The Black Wasps stood in an arc around the throne room door, each bowing as Priella approached.

“The tower is ours,” she said. “Let us go.”

They parted as she walked into the throne room, the Wasps then following. She marched toward the dais where the others waited and nodded to Narine. The wizardess turned and began to gather her magic, brow furrowed, teeth clenched, a bright glow surrounding her. Priella frowned. She is tiring and struggles to cast the spell.
