CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Dakota stared towards the precinct's door, watching the shouting men.
The note on the door of the precinct closed for renovation had fallen, fluttering to the ground as it had been slammed.
Now, the sheriff that Marcus had been speaking to earlier was standing on the stoop, glaring, his hands on his hips. Sheriff Tillman was a silver-haired man, with a neat, trimmed, gray beard. He was yelling at Marcus, waving his hands about and pointing in accusation.
âWhat the hell do you mean you're looking at my brother?â
Marcus held out his hands in a calming gesture. Officer Edison had snuck around the side of the building, toward where a couple of the police vehiclesâwhich hadn't been relocated during renovationsâremained parked.
Dakota felt a strong urge to hop out of the vehicle and rush to Marcus's defense as he weathered the storm of the silver-haired sheriff's tirade.
But she knew better than that. If anything, the best path forward was to stick to the plan. She'd go speak with Tillman. If she waited too long, the sheriff might warn his brother.
He'd probably call ahead either way.
Once Marcus calmed things, he'd have to look into Avery.
She nodded, feeling a flush of guilt as she floored the pedal and tore away from the curb. Even over the screech of the tires, she could still hear the sheriff's shouting trailing after her as she disappeared once more into the night, leaving the precinct behind her in silence.
As she picked up speed, glancing at the GPS, she could feel her heart pounding.
Seven minutes wasted.
Better than the thirty it would've taken to cross town. But Marcus would have to hurry to reach Avery. And the sheriff clearly wasn't in a playful mood.
She shook her head, scowling as she picked up the pace, speeding forward.
A part of Dakota felt a surge of unease. She very much wanted to speak to Marcus, to stand at his side. To let him know it was going to be okay.
On the other hand, she didn't know what to say.
The best step forward was to find Irene. Marcus's cousin was still out there. Dead or alive, only time would tell.
She cut through the small town, merging back out onto old, dusty roads, picking up the pace again and following the thin purple line apparent on the GPS.
As she hastened forward, her heart kept skipping. Coach Little's words drifted back to her, the idea that the only person who would kidnap an athlete was someone willing to face a competitive type. Someone who was a fighter, feisty enough to give them trouble.
What sort of kidnapper, what sort of killer wanted competition?
She shook her head, flooring the pedal and breaking every speed limit possible. She swerved around a switchback, tires skidding, and hit the sirens. She'd cut them five minutes before arriving, but for now, she needed the roads cleared.
She needed to reach Tillman's land before his brother warned him. Before Tillman's sons could return from town and provide their old man backup.
