CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The motorcycle was outpacing Dakota’s car. Ahead of her, the police cruiser was slowed as it turned around a switchback. Dakota veered over yellow lines, passing the police cruiser on the left.

The mustached driver leaned on his horn, but she ignored the cop. He was too slow anyway; besides, he’d seemed a bit too familiar with their suspect.

Now, she sped past him, kicking up particles of stone along the road as she raced up the asphalt. She swerved back across the double yellow line, and fell in behind the fleeing low-rider. She spotted where Amy Cosgrove, the fake-queen, wrapped her pale arms around the stomach of Nathan Finny. He was wearing leathers, and also metal gauntlets on his hands—the sorts of hand armor he used in the jousting tournament.

The queen still had a tiara perched in her hair, but the hair was now wavering behind her, caught by the wind and sent flying.

Dakota sped after them, her eyes narrowed, peering darkly through the windshield as she picked up her pace. Her eyes fixated on the fleeing figures as they reached the crest of a hill and began to descend down the slope of a mountain.

The motorcycle was close now, the brake lights illuminating the ground in red, competing with the glare from Dakota's headlights. Dakota could see the tension in the driver and passenger. They were both wearing black jackets and helmets, and she could see the man's eyes fixed on the road ahead as he leaned into the turns. Amy's arms were around Nathan's waist, tight as if she was trying to hold onto him for dear life.

Dakota could feel her heart rate increasing as the SUV and motorcycle raced down the mountain. She had to think quickly, or else she may lose her quarry.

She calmed herself, forcing her mind to focus on the task at hand. The adrenaline coursed through her. The hunt. Her skin prickled with goosebumps, and she felt a familiar urge rise within her, but then fade again, satisfied by the rush of adrenaline.

Her hands gripped the steering wheel and her body braced in the seat as they descended the swerving, steep incline roads, lined by metal barriers and the occasional, sporadically placed cluster of trees.

As they rounded a corner, she noticed a large rock outcropping on the side of the road. Taking a chance, she slammed on the brakes and veered the SUV to the right. The motorcycle swerved to avoid the car and ended up skidding on the side of the mountain. The female passenger screamed as the motorcycle slid closer and closer to the edge.

Dakota knew she had to act quickly. She threw the car into gear, slid the wheel around and pushed the pedal down as hard as she could. The SUV roared toward the duo, and Dakota quickly noticed that the motorcycle was slowing down. She put her foot on the brake and brought the car to a stop, blocking their path.
