Chapter 9

One on One

Kendra

Play Paradise turned out to be so fun the girls were requesting to go. Again. With nothing else on the agenda until much later in the day, Kendra dropped them off and headed out for a little peace and quiet. There were a few places that were easier to explore without the girls.

They had dressed in medieval costumes though Kendra had to admit her dress was rather revealing, showing her long legs and framing her chest. Her braids were pulled back into one large braid.

Many of the corridors were empty, featuring polished floors, beautiful archways and art of all kinds accenting the castle. Nooks for reading or writing or drawing were hidden all over providing an endless number of secrets to find. After winding through a few halls with her steps echoing behind her she came upon a huge set of double doors and knew instantly she’d found the library.

It was even more magnificent than she’d thought. The first thing she did was check for ladders. She’d always wanted to glide across a bookshelf on one like Bell did in Beauty and the Beast. Unfortunately, the few ladders she did find were securely bolted in place with red warning plaques fastened on the rungs. It was a ladder, who could get that wrong?

Kendra began her climb to get a better view of the library. Her head poked up at the third-floor balcony and nearly jumped as her eyes met someone else’s. Fish boy. He looked at her like a boy on Christmas morning. Two more steps and she was up the ladder and looking over the railing admiring the beauty of the library.

Though her eyes wandered the bookshelves, her full attention was on the man beside her sitting on a red velvet love seat. He watched her, not even trying to hide it. She turned to look at him, her energy skyrocketing almost to a boiling point. He opened his mouth, probably to introduce himself but Kendra cut him off with a wave of her hand. She held a finger over his lips mischievously. They were warm and soft against her skin. Then, with a flick of her hand she indicated the library and pressed her finger against her lips to signal they had to stay quiet.

There wasn’t a reason she could think of to not speak to him. But there was magic within the silence. It was almost like breaking a spell between them; once broken, it would never be undone. She wondered if he felt it too.

The cushion sank under her weight as she sat beside him. He had a stack of white papers with him still, worn around the edges and a red ink pen. On top of that was the week's event planner. Kendra plucked the pen and planner up. Nestling in beside him, she set her feet over the arm of the chair and began going through the events, placing a star by all the ones she’d planned on attending. He sank back into the chair and wrapped his arm around her.
