Chapter Eighteen

“Seneca!” I yell as I grab my side that is throbbing uncontrollably.

I can see the moment he realizes what’s happening. His expression shifts from surprise to terror. He jerks back and drops his hands, gun coming to rest by his side. “No… wait…” he says, sounding confused.

I quickly push away all thoughts of pain and turn back to Mason, but he’s gone. The parking lot is empty. “No, no, no.” I start rushing into the parking lot, pain flaring up my side with each step.

Seneca grabs me and spins me around. The quick movement makes the pain deepen. “I shot you.”

“Look for Mason,” I say, but my words fall on deaf ears.

Seneca looks panicked, afraid, and upset as he holds onto me. “I thought you were… that thing. I saw that thing standing there, and it was going to hurt you, so I shot it… I shot that thing. Oh god, I shot you. I’m so sorry. Sit down.”

I grab Seneca’s face in my hands. “Seneca, Mason Page is out of his cell, worry about finding him.”

Suddenly, there are guards filing out into the parking lot, rushing for the gates, understanding that Mason Page is gone, that we all let him go scot-free.

Seneca doesn’t even seem to notice them; he’s still staring at me in shock. When I pull my hand away from his face, I realize that I’m leaving blood streaks across his cheek.

“I shot you,” he says as he forces me to sit down.

“I’m going to live.” I pull my shirt up. It looks like the bullet just grazed my side on the way through.

“I’m so sorry.” He grabs my face desperately. “What if I’d killed you?” He looks panicked even after seeing that it’s nothing life-threatening.

“If I die from a flesh wound, then I probably wasn’t going to make it anyway.”

Seneca is seemingly delirious as he continues to lose his mind. He’s grabbing me and whispering things that make me wonder if his brain became messed up in the last trip into Page’s mind.

“What happened?” Collins asks as she rushes up.

He looks up at her with wide eyes. “I shot him!” Seneca shouts. “Get help.”

“It was an accident,” I say. “And I’m fine.”

“Do you have a medic on staff?” she shouts as she heads off to find someone to help.

Seneca, who is convinced these are my dying moments, cups my face and kisses my forehead. Which I suppose would be sweet if he hadn’t been the one who shot me. It does make me feel a little better. His touches calm me enough to bring my adrenaline down a little.

“Will you calm down?” I ask. Honestly, I’m starting to feel bad for him. “I’m not dying!”

“I could have killed you. I could have killed you,” he whispers as he kisses my forehead again.

I try not to enjoy it as much as I am. I try to remind myself that this situation isn’t the best to be caring about the amount of affection he is oozing. “If
