Chapter 14

Violet

“Ms. Brant, you are a bitter, soulless, gold-digging woman. You hold on to your husband’s investments and holdings like you somehow had a part in helping him manage them, and then you lord them over your daughter’s head and use her as a pawn in order to get something that will line your pockets even further. You are angry, and you are a black hole that sucks the life out of anything around it,” Ray said.

I stood there in shock as he lost his temper, as he held the crowd captivated with the words he slung at Vivien.

“You’re bitter about your daughter leaving home and marrying the love of her life, who just happened to be a woman. But the fact that you don’t agree with your daughter’s choice in who to love doesn’t mean you can go around slaughtering the reputation of others. Emeline is happy with Shannon, and you decided to wreak havoc on a honeymoon I gifted them after their wedding because you can’t stand for things to not go your way. You can’t stand the fact that you can no longer use the beauty of your daughter to make familial connections, and it makes you ache with fury,” he said.

I felt tears rush my eyes as he decimated his own reputation in the middle of the ballroom.

“You have no right to take your anger out on Violet or try to ruin this event for James and his parents. You have no right to come in here and decimate the happiness of hundreds of people because you, yourself, can’t find the happiness you seek. Violet is not the reason why our almost-marriage imploded. You and my parents forcing me and Emeline onto one another before guilting me into a sense of honor and duty is what imploded our marriage. Emeline never loved me, and I never loved her. She’s a dear friend, but that’s all we ever were. And that’s all we ever would be. You know it. I know it. My parents know it. But no one gave a damn about it because of the real reason why the wedding was arranged,” he said.

“You shut your mouth right now. You have no right to speak to me this way!” Vivien shrieked.

“If you have to badmouth my girlfriend, Violet, then I have the right to correct you on your stance. She’s a caring, giving, loving woman. She’s a bright light in this cruel world I won’t let you snuff out. She isn’t the reason the wedding failed, and she isn’t the reason you’re angry. Your lack of control is why you’re angry. The fact that you can’t expand your husband’s empire because you have no clue what you’re doing is why you’re angry. And the fact that you have nothing to lord over my family’s head is the reason why you’re angry. I won’t let you destroy her reputation any longer, and I certainly won’t allow you to cause her any more tears. Do you hear me?”

The crowd around Ray had gathered, consisting of at least half the party members.
