Chapter 11 – Paralyzed

Madeline often had trouble sleeping at night, but this was the worst by far. Her mind was usually racing with agendas and plans to implement, but surprisingly, it was Dinah’s words that were front and center.

“You care about us, right?”

She turned over in her bed and flipped the pillow to the cooler side. She kicked the blankets off her feet and immediately regretted it. Grant hadn’t turned on the heat yet.

She grunted and reached out for the edge of the blanket, but of course, it had fallen on the floor. Frustrated, she scooted down the mattress and then stretched her hand towards the floor until she felt the familiar fabric. She yanked it upwards and over her, keeping only one leg out. Dinah’s words resumed haunting her as soon as she settled back in comfortably.

It wasn’t that she didn’t care...it was that she hadn’t proven that she cared enough. She apparently hadn’t invested the same feelings in them as they had in her, but, how could she? She was human! Even if Dinah didn’t report her, Leandra certainly would, and she would push Dinah to do the right thing and join her because she didn’t want to see her sister suffer. Madeline’s life would be weighed on the scales and balances of importance, and it would be decided that she wasn’t worth it. Humans were things. Pests. Vermin.

And they were witches. The evolution of mankind. The hope of the future. The progression of thought.

Madeline turned over again.

She wasn’t using them...she really did enjoy their company, and except for Leandra’s bluntness, she genuinely liked each of them. She wished she could be counted amongst them, but perhaps it was wishful thinking. For now, she could have fun with them, and hopefully they all made it to the Harvest...but if they got in her way while trying to stop the Ostara, what then? Would Dinah’s words ring true? Would their friendship transcend her mission? Would they have the audacity to join her? Because she certainly could not join them.

This is stupid, Madeline thought to herself. She couldn’t worry about this now. She had school in (she looked up at the light streaming through the window) a couple of hours, and Mr. Tate would be calling upon her.
