The burning memory of that night sparked down the cosmic thread like the fuse on a stick of dynamite.

Arabella watched it vanish off into the ether. She had no idea if it would make it all the back to Glasgow, but she had to hope.

From behind her, a familiar deep, soft voice spoke. “Bella?”

She turned. “Munro!”

A smile broke over Arabella’s face like the sun coming out as she saw Munro approach the bars again. “I was beginning to think you weren’t coming back.”

“Me?” Munro said. “Oh, even the grave couldn’t keep me away. Ironically.”

The two of them pressed their hands together, separated by the invisible shield between them.

“How much longer can we go on like this…” Munro said. “Arabella, we have to get you out of there.”

“I have a plan. Or, I had a plan. It’s complicated somewhat now. But it should be easier on your end,” Arabella said. She lifted a stone from the floor, polished like fine brass and flattened to a disc. “If you skip this stone, it’ll follow the path I laid out. It’ll go home. My home.”

“You want me to skip it across the Great Ocean?”

Arabella swallowed. “Would you do that for me? For us?”

“Oh, look at you with your big, sad eyes. You know I’d die for you, my love.”

“Then do something harder,” Arabella said. She took her hand away from the bars. “Live. Live for me.”

Munro nodded. “How are you getting the stone out of your cell?”

Arabella walked as far away from the bars as she could, and then rolled it on its edge like a coin. It trailed along the floor on its own momentum, through the bars, and onto the floor.

“Take it,” Arabella said. “Swim swiftly, angel.”

Munro picked up the stone. “It’s warm.”

“It has my love,” Arabella said. “All of it. So, it will move fast. You’ll have to push to keep up.”

Munro held the stone to her heart. “What do I do when I get there?”

“I have friends back home. I think together we might be able to break these bars.”

“Okay. Okay. I understand,” Munro nodded, hiding the stone under her cloak.

“I’ll see you soon my love. They’re expecting you at midnight.”

“Who’s they?”

“Holly. And the Archive.”

Munro canted her head. “I thought… Holly was…”
