Chapter 16

If the farmer notices my glowing wand, he says nothing. It’s dark and probably easy enough for him to mistake it for a penlight.

“C’mere, doggie,” he says, pronouncing it like he’s a cowboy on a cattle drive. The dog scrambles up to his feet, giving me one last glance, and then trots off to the farmer. He’s holding out a little nugget of kibble and the dog almost slurps up the farmer’s whole fist trying to get at it. I think back to what Kitsune said, about dogs only being loyal to whoever scoops the kibble.

“Hurry up and get that pooch,” Sheriff Emery yells from the front of the trailer. “It stinks in here.”

Flores narrows his eyes at me but says nothing. There’s no mistaking it, he sees me. We go so far as to lock eyes—mine hopefully look stony and challenging and don’t betray the impending heart attack I’m about to have.

I wait for a beat for him to do something—anything—and all he does is turn and leave.

Even the little gesture where you pantomime a neck-slash with your index finger and go “ehchh” would have been preferable to his odd silence.

“That thing smells like a seat cushion at a restaurant that only sells pickled cabbage and baked beans,” the sheriff says. “I don’t know why you’d want a creature like that.”

“It will keep prowlers away,” the farmer says. “I’ve had a few incidents lately of trespassers.” He clears his throat.

Intentionally? People have to clear their throats because of an itch or a wad of phlegm.

As they leave the trailer and drive away, I crash from the huge adrenaline spike.

You made it, Kitsune says. What spell did you do on him?

“I didn’t do any spell,” I say. “The farmer just didn’t say anything. Isn’t that weird? I like him less and less the more we investigate.”

Let me get this straight, Kitsune says. You don’t trust him because he let you go instead of having you arrested? I’d hate to see your opinion of the guy if he’d complimented your outfit.

“A normal person wouldn’t have walked in on me hiding back here and said nothing, especially when armed and in the company of the sheriff,” I say.

A normal person wouldn’t have been hiding in a dingy old murder scene trailer, Kitsune counters.

“I know that,” I say. “I never claimed to be normal.”

And you’re not a murderer, despite your… eccentricities. Maybe he hates cops. Maybe he has a secret crush on you. Maybe he knows you’re a nosy vigilante who can’t mind her own business and figures to let you conduct your own investigation.

“It’s still suspicious,” I say. I get up and try to dust the spiderwebs off my clothes.

Too bad it’s a clue you can’t tell Grant about, she reminds me.

“Guess not,” I say. Now that I know I’ve got the trailer to myself, I continue my search for evidence. The couch is grubby and I’m glad that I’m wearing gloves. There’s nothing in the cushions except crumbs.

The sheriff’s lazy, but I’m pretty sure he looked under the couch cushions, Kitsune says.
